Hello there - it's nice you've found my page on WikiFido. I'm a relatively new member, but I'm a pretty internet savvy dog, having had a blog all my own for a little more than a year, and having jumped on the dog blog bandwagon with memberships at Dogster, and Dogs with Blogs, of course. My name is Abby K9 - it's both a play on words (my mom likes to call me Abbydog when we're playing), and also a bit of humor since many people only know German Shepherds as police dogs, so they often ask if I'm "one of those K-9 dogs". Mom smiles and says, "Of course - she's an Abby K9." At the end of May 2008, I'm turning five - I guess that's about the age I'm supposed to start settling down and become a calm, well behaved dogger. Haha... that's what mom expects, anyway. I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon, though. I might be calm and laid back in the house (yeah, "laid back", says mom - more like "laid on the couch!") but I can be quite the firecracker when I have a chance to run, run, run. When I'm off leash, standing still is not one of my strong points, and I've been known to give the Energizer bunny a run for his money! My owners are the kind of people who know a lot about dogs - and like to share what they know. That can be pretty boring at times when people talk to them at the store after seeing me (and saying what a beautiful dog I am, of course) and they end up talking forever, requiring me to sit still when I'd much rather be moving around and checking things out. I guess you could consider my parents Shepherd activists because they always want to share things about me and my fellow GSDs - for example, the fact that we do come in colors other than black and tan, and that we're not supposed to be huge, fat dogs! I'm also a rescue dog. Yup - I'm one of those purebred, predigreed dogs (ear tattoo and all) that make up nearly a quarter of dogs dumped in shelters across the United States each year. As a matter of fact, mom and dad came to get me a day before my time was up, and they were going to put me to sleep since it's so hard to find a place that will let people be owned by a German Shepherd. (Apartment rules, insurance and all that ...) But my parents were lucky. Not only am I the best dog (ever!), but the place where we live allows German Shepherds, and so does daddy's renter's insurance. I'm even covered under the liability clause - $30,000 in case I ever ... I don't know... lick someone to death? Since I'm a rescue, mom and dad always make it a point to tell people what great dogs rescued dogs are. Mom made the video below to help raise awareness for shelter dogs - well, shelter German Shepherds, since the video features only pretty GSDs like myself. Please make sure you tell her if you like the video by commenting - and by passing it on!

6 Million Reasons to Rescue The video below is called "Rescue Me", but it could also be called, "6 Million Reasons to Rescue". It's 6 million, because that's the approximate number of dogs who end up at animal shelters in the United States each year. That's 6 million dogs who are no longer wanted, came from unplanned litters, were running stray, or were seized by animal control. Sometimes they are given up by families who 'can't handle' the dog or don't know how to deal with its behavioral issues. What these families don't know is that 61%, or nearly four million of shelter dogs are put to sleep each year. I made this video to raise awareness to shelter dogs, and in particular, to raise awareness for German Shepherds in shelters. Purebred dogs account for as much as 25% of dogs in shelters. If you are a rescue, or an individual involved in rescue or raising awareness for shelter dogs, humane societies, and rescues, please feel free to use this video on your website, blog, or anywhere else you'd like. No special credit to me is required - there are credits at the end of the video. All I ask is that the video is not edited in any way. German Shepherd Links
