Every year the American Kennel Club lists the most popular AKC-recognized breeds. The 2005 ranking of top 25 most popular breeds (including number of dogs registered) is as follows:

Although not a scientific survey, the list is not restricted to dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club and provides more of a popularity vote than the strict count of registered AKC dogs.
