Collie/Shepherd Mix, Ogden Utah

Ashley age 14My dog's name: Ashley Pellew-Faucette

Hometown: Ogden, Utah

How we met:
I had just lost my job and broken up with my lying, cheating boyfriend of 3 years, and while reading the newspaper, I turned to the classifieds and saw an ad for Collie-mix puppies. I still don't know why I looked at the classifieds that day, because I never had before, and I wasn't looking for a pet. But as soon as I saw the ad, I rushed out the door. There were 2 puppies left. I chose the female, a shy, black puppy with big Shepherd ears, and next to my marriage, it has been the best and most important relationship in my life.

What makes my dog special: Ashley is perfect for me. She knows when I'm sad. We can be in separate rooms, and I start crying at a sad movie, and she just knows, and comes to me. When I am sick, she stays with me. She can be silly, out of the blue and make me laugh. One night when I had too much to drink, and decided to save time and sleep next to the toilet, she curled up against me and stayed with me all night. Twice she scared off "attackers", and I don't know how many times she has saved me. I have several chronic, painful medical conditions, and Ashley helps me focus away from the pain
Most importantly, she brought my husband and I together. I have been married for almost 10 years--I've had Ashley for 15.

My dog's likes/dislikes: Ash has to take medicine for arthritis, and she hates it. No matter what I hide her meds in, she tries to find a way to spit it out. She loves to go for rides in the car, loves to hike in the mountains, and loves to come to work with me. PetSmart is like her Disneyland. When we go, she walks through the whole store, and I let her lead. She chooses aisles at random, and we don't stop till she has gone down all of them. She and my husband play a game. When we get to PetSmart, he takes his dog, and disappears. Ashley will hunt up and down the aisles, moving faster and faster till we find them. Then she lets out a single triumphant bark and does this funny little victory dance. My husband is supposed to stop and let us catch up, then go hide again.
As a young dog, she loved buttons. Whenever I started spending too much time from home, I'd come home to find my laundry basket messed up, and clothes pulled around the room. It wasn't until after I did the laundry and was getting ready for work that I noticed a couple of buttons missing from my shirt. So I'd pull another shirt and start buttoning it up, only to see that this shirt also had buttons missing. Then I noticed the broken pieces of buttons on the carpet. She did the same thing to my husband after we got married. She didn't do it all the time, so you'd forget and leave a shirt out and then she'd get you.Ashley in back yard

She reminds me, in looks and personality of my departed Chance who adopted my husband after I married him, and would gather up the last things that he touched, before he went to work. We would find a spatula, or wrench plus clothes, by the front door. mm
