Red and White BasenjiThe basenji is probably best known as "the African barkless dog". Though known for their lack of bark, basenjis are far from silent. They are capable of a wide range of vocalizations from whimpers, cries, growls, yodels, a warning boof and very loud screaming. Basenjis are considered part of the hound group by AKC and compete in sighthound events such as lure coursing and sprint racing. Like most hounds, basenjis are independent thinkers and benefit from positive reinforcement training that gives them an outlet for their energy and to redirect some of their more creative exploits.

The national breed club for basenjis in the United States is the Basenji Club of America. The club provides information for learning about the breed and suggested questions for screening breeders.

All living things carry genes for defects, dogs are no exception. Responsible breeders test for diseases that are known to exist in their breed and use breeding strategies to reduce the risk of their puppies having these disease. To learn more about inherited diseases check out the BCOA website. To verify that a breeder is testing for inherited diseases type their kennel name into the OFA search engine.

Much of this information I provided was based on research I made on Basenjis after having adopted one myself. Basenjis, in my opinion, make an amazing pet for those who are not looking for an obedient dog, but for one that has a mind of his/her own, and who has an intelligence unmatched by many . . . perhaps even your own!
