Best Vacation Spots for You and Your DogThis is a featured page

Austin, Texas
Due to its laid back, "hip" lifestyle, Austin is a fun and pet friendly place to take your loved ones. Why?
  • The city recently passed an ordinance giving local restaurants the right to allow 4-legged family members to dine along side their humans. Probably the best restaurant to requent is Freddie's Place on S 1st street, which has a great outdoor dining area that's really more of an evening hang out spot than a restaurant! There are ever-growing lists of pet-friendly establishments at the following 2 links: City registry of pet friendly restaurants ; Dogfriendly.com's list
  • Austin has 12 designated leash free areas, listed here. Several have ample access to the city's many water sources, some are located on the hike & bike trail, and a couple are fenced in if you have a roamer. There are no fees and no initial temperament testing, just come as you are (of course, it's preferred that your dogs be well behaved in public)!
  • Austin lies in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. It's truly a gem with all the scenery and outdoor activities. There are several greenbelts in the city, as well as a 10+ mile hike & bike trail along the Colorado River downtown for those dogs who love to jog!

Transatlantic Cruises with your Dog
For the ultimate luxury vacation with your pet, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 allows pets on board for select Transatlantic Sailings. This ship offers a special pet package, designed to pamper your pooch!

Hawaii

Get that grass skirt out and one for Fido too! Travel restrictions to and from Hawaii have loosened up and now the tropics are more accessible to you and your pooch. Several hotels in the Waikiki area now cater to dogs. These include:

  • The Kahala
  • Sheraton Princess Kaiulani
  • W Honolulu
  • Four Seasons Maui

However, before you pack up your pooch and head off to the islands, be aware that taking your dog will require a significant amount of advance preparation. To enter Hawaii, dogs must have had two rabies shots, at least three months apart, microchip ID, and a rabies test at least 120 days prior to travel.

My boyfriend and I just went to Provincetown, MA with our dog, Bijou, and everyone was incredibly dog friendly. From Memorial Day to Labor Day almost all the outdoor patios are pet friendly - as long as you sit at corner table - so as not to bother anyone. There is one small off-leash dog park (which not very exciting), but many of the town beaches allow on-leash pups before 9am and after 6pm. Because I'm not a local, I don't know where the hidden (off-leash) gems are - but I'd sure like to know! There are several lodging/camping options for people with pets, too. We stayed at the Ocean's Edge in N.Truro. The accommodations were nothing to write home about - but it did the trick.

Thanks, Whickums! Austin sure sounds like a Fido-friendly city to visit! So, have the dog friendly restaurants become more popular since they now allow dogs in the outside area? I've also heard of restaurants that do this and provide a "doggy menu" also, so that you pooch can also enjoy a fine dining out experience.

I left a message for you on your personal profile page...maybe you could check it out...

From the poll, it looks like a lot of people take their dogs on vacation with you. I'm wondering what types of places do people take their dogs? Anybody? Always looking for good ideas!
