Short History of the Breed:
English Treeing Coonhounds were bred with French Gascon Hounds in the South.
Bluetick Treeing Coonhounds are considered to be the thinking coonhound. They are very intuitive and seem to understand situations. They are also one of the best cold-nosed hounds-they can find and follow old tracks-a few hours old. They will spread their legs and shimmy up a straight tree to get after their prey. Coonhounds have three ways of climbing and can shimmy over an 8 ft. concrete block wall.

Physical Description and Size

Temperament: Very tolerant and protective of the family and property. All of my Blueticks have been luxury loving-the soft couch. They are very curious and check out everything.

Dog Care: They do well with dry dog food. They need to be able to run or walk for several miles a day.

Health Issues and Life Expectancy:
All hounds are prone to having a thyroid deficiency. If the hound is licking itself excessively, that can be a sign of thyroid problems.
Hip dysplasia: They have long backs and legs and they get heavy. This combination is very bad for active dogs and the hip joint wears out.

Bluetick Coonhounds are not at all ideal for people who live in homes without fences, apartments, or in closely-spaced neighborhoods. Because they are bred to be hunting dogs and to "give voice", they will chase and howl at even the slightest creature or perceived threat. Many Blueticks have ended up in rescues or in dog pounds because the owners did not know how loud they can be and were forced to give them up.

I live in a large city. My Bluetick has stopped several house break-ins. He's a thinking dog & can smell fear & meth and re-acts vocally. I've had Blueticks in the country that had the same attributes. They knew who the bad people were. A Bluetick can be heard for miles. Their bawl

I actually have to disagree about the apartment rule. I just adopted a bluetick coonhound puppy. she is 7 months old and is weighing in at 40 pounds even. Yes, they do have "the voice" and yes they do love to follow the scents. But they can live in an apartment, mine certainly has no problem to do so. If you want to adopt a bluetick, and you live in an apartment find a dog park near you and take them there once a day. Mine loves the dog park and she has no problem living in an apartment. She sleeps all the time anyways.. just be aware that when they have to go outside, so do you with the dog on the leash.
