Short History of the Breed
Border Terriers are believed to have originated in the border area between England and Scotland. In fox hunting, once Fox Hounds located a fox den, border terriers were used to either corner the fox so the hunter could dig it out, or borders would bolt the fox for the hunter.
Physical Description and Size
Border Terriers are small to medium-sized dogs with a wiry outer coat. They are roughly 13-18 pounds in weight.
Temperament
Borders are known for being affable dogs but like all terriers, must be well-socialized early. They are known to get along well with other dogs and children so they make great family pets. They have a tendency to dig and since they are hunters, they are always on alert. Borders are high-energy dogs that need a lot of exercise. They are not a lazy lap dog, they need and want activity! The best way to sum it up is that borders are not for the owner who wants a dog "some of the time". You have to be a serious dog owner to have a BT because they are smart, active, and if bored, will find ways to keep busy - ways you might not approve of!
Dog Care
(exercise, grooming, diet)
Border terriers need regular exercise, though they are small, they are terriers and have a lot of energy to expend! They DO shed! Some publications note that they are not shedders, but that is wrong. Their coat is meant to be hand-stripped and can be learned by an owner to do so. Clipping their coat essentially ruins it and makes it less dirt and weather resistant. Stripping needs to be done approximately 3-4 times per year depending on the dog's coat and how often the owner wants it stripped. BTs can put on weight easily, especially if not properly exercised. They are generally hearty eaters and don't have too many food issues. They will eat anything, so be careful! Because they are highly food-motivated, they are trained easily.
