Chinook
Short History of the Breed
After the gold rush in Alaska in the early 1900's, Arther Walden wanted to create a sled dog with these atributes: tremendous power, endurance, speed and friendly nature. He then bred a mastiff-type dog named Kim, with a dog named Ningo who was a direct descendent of Admiral Peary's famous Greenland Husky. On January 17, 1917 the dogs gave birth to 3 pups. One of the dogs had all the traits Walden admired and was named Chinook after one of his dogs he lost in Alaska. Chinook dogs are one of the only breeds created in America.Today there are only about 500 living purebred Chinooks. The dogs have been brought back from the brink of extinction! It's amazing that these beautiful dogs were nearly lost forever.
Physical Description & Size
Northern breed with a double coat, with tawny colored longer hair over a soft downy under coat.Temperament
Chinooks are calm, gentle disposition with an inherent fondness for children and loyalty to their human family.Dog Care (exercise, grooming, diet)
The dogs love people and when I mean love, they really love the family they are with. Before I got my Chinook I read on one of the breeders websites that if you have a huge fenced in backyard and you just let your Chinook outside; it would only want to go if you or another dog came with it. Chinooks do not like to be alone.Health Issues, Life Expectancy:
