It never ceases to amaze me at the nutty postings! If you think your purebred dog came by virtue of just being a purebred dog...your wrong! All purebred dogs are basically refined mixed breed dogs! Get off of your high horse! There are more purebred dogs in shelters than there are mixed or designer dogs and the reason they are there is because their darned owners put them there! The breeders didn't put them there! If you have a problem with dogs being in shelters, stop your whining and go adopt them! Build yourself a huge kennel and go adopt every single dog in the shelters and pay out of your pocket to take care of them and perhaps the issues they may have. MOre purebred dogs have health problems than designer dogs because breeders inbreed the dogs so much, causing genetic defects. That's reality and a fact whether you like it or not.
No one is making money selling designer dogs! We breed Goldendoodles and we spend more money out of our own pocket than we ever take in. Your complaining about breeders of designer dogs living off of their dogs???? Your show breeders of your purebred dogs who are selling purebred dogs for upwards of $20,000 a piece, my friends, are the ones living off of their dogs! Sounds like you people are jealous! Envious! Ridiculous!

My amazing companion is a SCOODLE; an unintended cross between a purebred Scottish terrier and a purebred apricot poodle. His name is Kahlua (like the coffee liquor) and I found him through Petfinder.com at a rescue shelter in Waco, TX

I think that a lot of people don't understand the difference between a dog BREED and a Designer Dog.
Yes, it is true that all dog breeds had to start somewhere. Let's take the German Shepherd as an example. When the breed was started, it was with a specific goal in mind - create a strong, agile, working herding dog. There were already many types of herding dogs in Germany at the time, and the breed's father, Max von Stephanitz, picked the dogs that most embodied what he wanted in his breed, drew up a standard, and set goals for his breeding. Out of this came the German Shepherd as we know it now. When a new breed is created, there are a couple of things that are essential: a clear goal for the breed, and a drawn up standard - the things people want for and in the breed. Breeders will breed for some characteristics, like specific colors, structure, and temperament. The other important thing about breeds is that they are not breeds until they breed true. That means, you can say that you will continue to produce the traits you want in your dogs with each litter. In the German Shepherd this is now ensured by breeding dogs that conform to the breed standard, and titling breeding dog - titling shows how their looks and structure measures up in conformation, and how their temperament and working ability measures up on the trial field. Most "designer dog" breeders don't actually want to create a breed that "breeds true", like it should. They simply take two purebred dogs, cross them, and sell the puppies under a "cute" name like Cockapoo or Maltipoo. Their breeding stock is not titled, so we don't know what health, structural, or genetic issues are found within. They have no goals for their dogs other than selling the puppies. Fact is, you have no guarantees with such a dog - health or temperament wise, because it's not possible to give one! And therein lies the difference.

Or, instead of paying sucker prices, you could just go to your local rescue or shelter and adopt the same mongrel you've been sold as fashionable.

It is important to keep in mind that every single one of the breeds listed above is NOT a purebred. Disturbingly, somehow the breeders of these poor dogs are handing out "registry papers" or advertising their litters in the paper as registered. THESE DOGS ARE NOT PUREBREDS. The registries some breeders use to get around this are known for intentionally registering mixed breed dogs. They are all about the money, as the large majority of breeders of these dogs are.
This fad is a detriment to the overpopulation problem in this nation. People are rushing out to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars (I have seen yorkie/rottie crosses sold for 10K!!!!) on these puppies from "breeders" when they can get the same mix of dog at any shelter for so much less. So many will be euthanized because of the ignorance and greed of some people. The only reason for breeding any dog is to better an established breed, ever. Anything else does nothing but sentence thousands more puppies and adult dogs to death all over the country.

i have to agree with all of the recent posts. i was sincerely hoping that this site could be a helpful rescurce. however after seeing what its about i've decided to remove myself. i dont have time to see posts about peoples so called "designer dogs". i watch them die in the local shelter every day. i was really hoping this site could be a place to help educate the public. many people dont realize the wonderful dogs available at their local shelters. 80% of whcih are put to sleep each year while people go online and look in newspapers to find the types of dogs and pay tons of money. it's rediculous. i recently took a call from someone who bought a "purebred" bichon with papers. However she couldn't even pronounce the breed name and didn't know if the breeder was licensed or not. Three month old puppy they had for 3 days. It pottied on the floor so they put it outside and decided to get rid of it. The woman was very upset because they paid $600 for it and here it went and ruined her carpet. Education people!! Stupid people should breed or buy!

I got my cock-a-chon from a rescue centre. I didnt adopt him because he was a designer dog, I adopted him because he had the characteristics mixed with an adorable face...also because I was put off purebred dogs because of the health issues.
My friend took a shitzu x Westie....again not because it was designer. I dont think the issue here lies with people not knowing rescue dogs can be of these mixes, I think the issue lies with our awareness of rescue dogs. The scaremongers that put people off rescue dogs and the lack of after adoption support from some shelters. I paid £150 and travelled for a total of 8-9hrs to colelct him and bring him home. some breeders sell puppies, pure bred for a simlar price, some even deliver. We need more shelters, improved funding and services. Its hard work getting a rescue dog. Its a walk in the park to go buy a pup from any old breeder. Im glad I got my rescue pooch. Hes a darling. Im merely pointing out some of the reasons why people wont go for rescue dogs. Almost every single one of my friends told me not to adopt a dog. All of them told me to get a puppy. We need to educate people and improve services. Also....maybe the increased popularity of mixed breed/ designer dogs would make some of the homeless x breeds seem more appealing to people who previously only considered purebred?

Let's leave out the word Breed. These are not breeds but mixes of two or more purebreds.
This should be a good compromise. Let me know please.

As a breed fancier, rescue person, and animal shelter employee, I would like to state my opposition to the encouragement of "designer" breeds. Unfortunately, some of these breeds ("Cockapoos" and "Labradoodles" are already entrenched in our culture, so their inclusion is somewhat understandable, but to include speculative breed names is a big mistake, IMHO, because it only encourages pet owners or money-hungry individuals to add more animals to a world where too many already go without homes.
Please reconsider this section. Our shelter has already made the decision to NOT include "designer" breed names to our pet descriptions unless said animal should be released to us with registration papers from a REPUTABLE registry. Otherwise, if someone claims their dog to be a "Puggle," the dog is signed in as a Pug or Beagle MIX -- whichever breed is most apparent. We do not condone nor encourage intentional mixed-breeding by dignifying it with whimisical and arbitrary titles. I would prefer to see this site develop as a legitimate resource instead of a "free-for-all" for those who consider dogs as money-making schemes. Please think about it. |

"Designer" breeds are one of the dumber fashions out there; usually perpetrated by greedy "breeders" preying on the ignorance of dog buyers.
Shelters often have these same mixes. Don't encourage greedy backyard breeders or puppymills, please. |
