Although not much to look at, the dog parks in Lincoln Nebraska are a great way to get your dog safely off-leash and network with other local dog owners. We need more dog-related clubs and activities here though!

I write this as Alice has her paws on my lap and licking my elbow. I go to scratch her head and she immediately rolls over to expose her belly for scratching. How can this 50 lbs black lab/greyhound mix scare the crap out of anybody knocking at the door? A year ago, I was working upstairs and Alice was laying at my feet. In an instance, Alice jumps up, starts barking/howling at the top of her lungs and races downstairs. I walk downstairs yelling at her to stop as I wasn't expecting any visitors. That's when I see a strange man inside our kitchen, backing up and stepping behind the door to shield himself from Alice. So I get control of Alice and the man (standing outside now) asks if "Diane" was in... Apparently Diane had told the man to let himself in the back door. Of course I don't know any Diane, so I apologized and closed the door. Alice received a few (all organic and unprocessed) dog treats that night. She had no problem curling back up at my feet afterwards and forgetting all about it. I sure didn't! Such a sweet dog :)

When I was a kid (and like 70 lbs.) I used to have my labrador 'Turbo' drag me up the steet on my skateboard. I'd put his leash on him, toss his chew stick up the street, and hold on for dear life. Turbo loved two things in life - his chew stick and running. It was a marriage of two great loves. This practice ended abruptly when Turbo took a course correction for a cat, pulled me off my skateboard, and, consequently, all of the skin off of my knees. Not my brightest move upon reflection, but I was all of ten years old. Lessons learned.

My favorite thing to do with my dog Jackson is to take him out for a run around Green Lake here in Seattle. The best time to go as it warms up is right after work, while it's still light out and there are tons of other people and other dogs out there. Jackson is an Airedale, so he likes to run like crazy around the lake, but I'm there to get to bump into friends, enjoy the outdoors, and get my own exercise!
What's everyone else's favorite thing to do with their dog? |
