Dog rescue organizations are groups run by individuals, small groups, or breed clubs that help find homes for unwanted animals. These loveable dogs come from a number of places, including animal shelters or private owners who can no longer keep their pets, for a variety of reasons.

Find a shelter: Search by your state, city, or ZIP code through the ASPCA's shelter finder.

Find a pet: Petfinder.com- A conglomeration of thousands of rescues nationwide. You can search by location, breed, sex, age, or even size of dog and come up with any number of potential adoptive candidates! Each dog's page contains a short bio and adoption information, and often a link to the shelter's website where the dog is residing. Petfinder also contains a "classifieds" section where individual owners looking to rehome their dogs may post.

Save a pet on death row: Needfulsouls.org- A nationwide site that features photos of pets for adoption in animal control shelters. All breeds can be found in shelters including chihuahua's,maltese, yorkie's, mastiff's and everything inbetween. They each have a story to tell. These animals will be put down if homes are not found immediately. Find your new friend today and save a life of a needy soul.

I live in Tennesse. There are a lot of breeders in the area that need to be shut down. I decided to do my part and so I became a volunteer for chihuahua rescue usa. I want to warn people about this rescue. Although there are a lot of great volunteers that foster so many of these poor dogs. I think something needs to be done about the people who run this Rescue. Some of the coordinators will adopt these poor dogs to anyone without doing the proper background check on people. They just want to get rid of the dogs and get money. The volunteers pay for all care of the dogs they foster. Volunteers even pay for the vet bills with the understanding of getting reimbursed by the guy who operates the finacial aspect of the rescue. Several of the volunteers have never been reimbursed. We have complained and begged for our reimbursements. We volunteer to help these poor animals. We don't think this guy should be making a profit. I quit volunteering for this rescue, but volunteer for others. I have yet to see a portion of reimbursement. We are hoping the IRS catches up with this thief without shutting down the rescue.

This is an interesting thread. If a written contract was signed-then you can go to court. Since several people have the same problem and proof of services provided-bills-you should still be able to contact the District Attorney and ask for prosecution for fraud, even the State Attorney general. I'd contact the state tax board too. They wouldn't put this person in jail, but put him through hell-an audit. If he declares this as a tax exempt charity-he would face the possibility of losing a tax free income. This wouldn't mean that the rescue organization would be shut down-just reorganized. It sounds as though he's charging the adoptive families a fortune, besides possibly taking donations. I was turned down by many rescue organizations, when I was trying to find a hound. My son is a disabled vet-too frail for a large hunting type dog-I'm 67-too old to have a large active dog-we live in a city-not good for a hound . Nobody took it in consideration that young people have a high death rate from car wrecks and other risky activities-that young adults usually work long hours and are gone in non-dog activities, etc. I saw a post about 2 feral hounds in a high kill shelter over a 100 miles away. I called and was told to get there in a few hours and they didn't do back ground checks or follow ups. We went for one (1) hound and brought back 2. That was 03-19-08. They heel, etc-even on a coupler-Missy dances with my son. They insinctively knew not to put weight on him and to be careful around him. They have good weight and are muscled up-micro-chipped-have rattlesnake shots, rabies,etc. They've stopped several robberies-even 2 blocks away-they go rabid when they hear breaking glass, neighbors go out and look for the criminals-several other families now have hound mixes. A problem in a background check is that we have 2 vets to give us full care. One is shot and spay-other full care that says our pets don't have shots.

Shawn and Csilla are two of the most rudest people that I've ever met! If you want to be treated with rudness, consending attitudes, and complete disregard for your feelings, then go to this rescue. If you want to meet nice people that are helpful and people that don't make you feel like your the spawn of satan, then go anywhere else but Westside German Shepherd Rescue!!!

I've even read on the internet that because of these two very rude people, the shelter lost a $35,000.00 dollar donation!!!!!!!!!! That is very sad.
