Dry Kibble

Dry kibble forms the basis of this diet and dogs can certainly subsist on this type of food alone, so it’s important that you pick a quality dry dog food. The main ingredient, or first ingredient on the ingredients list, should be a meat, fish or egg based product. The protein source is a very important, as dogs are not able to digest vegetable proteins nearly as easily as meat proteins. The most difficult protein for a dog to digest is corn, so be wary of any foods that list corn in the first few ingredients. Wheat is another ingredient that shouldn’t appear in the first few ingredients as it is both difficult to digest and a potential allergen in dogs.

Also, be wary of any dog food that list “by product” in the first few ingredients. “Chicken by products,” for example, can include many different scrap chicken parts including necks, feet and even feathers.

Good dog food should also provide balanced nutrition so that Fido gets all of the essentials needed to be a healthy pet. The dog food should also contain fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals in the right proportions for a healthy diet. Add your dog's favorite brands to Favorite Food and Treats .
