Finnegan BearThis is a featured page

Finn on LogMy dog's name: Finnegan, Finney, Finn, Finnegan Bear, Bear...It is pretty amazing that he understands us at all really. Poor thing.

Hometown: Seattle, WA

How we met: During a routine look through Petfinder a certain raggedy Aussie (then named Cowboy) caught our eye and just wouldn't let go. We weren't sure we were ready to adopt a dog, but we just couldn't get "Cowboy" out of our heads. His picture was pretty awful, but something about him just stood out.
So one very stormy Saturday we drove to a shelter in Chehalis and met this wild thing. The power was out at the shelter and we couldn't see what was coming down the hall, but we heard the scratch of nails on a slick floor and the sounds of a dog pulling, pulling to get outside. We went outside with the cutest, shaggiest, scruff of a dog and he just went nuts. For a tiny second we weren't so sure, but then he sat in our laps, snuggled in and just ran away with our hearts. It has been a fantastic adventure ever since.

What makes my dog special: Well that's a tough one. There is just too much to say. Like most Aussies, Finnegan is very smart, too smart for us sometimes. And yet he doesn't use his intelligence for evil...at least not very often. He is hands down the cuddliest dog we have ever met. We heard the breed described as "fuzzy shadows" and "velcro dogs", but Finnegan takes this to a new level. Sure he loves his alone time too, but on balance if he can sit in your lap or curl up by your side he will. Not in the mood to pet him? Well let's just say persistence is another of his qualities.
He's very energetic and has the craziest hops ever. Give him an obstacle and he'll find a way to jump over it without any hesitation. This last part has lead to some anxiety on our parts as with insane leap we picture a broken bone. So far one chipped tooth and a few pulled muscles are the only battle scars.
This is not a shy dog. He loves people and he loves dogs and he is SO excited to meet both. He's also a bit of a show-off. Of course we think he's an amazing frisbee dog and it turns out he agrees. If he manages to attract a passerby's attention, he will prance and parade after every catch just waiting for the applause.

My dog's likes/dislikes: Finn loves morning, afternoon, and evening naps. He recently discovered that our bed is the best in the house and has decided it should really be his. He loves all games and all forms of exercise and is never, never too tired to play. He loves to people watch. His love of hating (read barking at) the UPS man has become an all-out sport involving listening with exceptionally keen ears for that particular braking sound before leaping off the couch while uttering something akin to a screaming bark. This game never gets old. Finnegan loves his family and loves extending this family to just about everyone he meets...The UPS guy is a rare exception, maybe it's those uniforms? Finn loves Spanish sheep cheese, the feeling of wind on his face, the sound of gravel under his paws, a graceful swish of a frisbee, red wine, Chilean poetry, jumping in mud puddles, sleeping in, indie rock, always always being by your side, and making new friends (only one of these is made up).
Finnegan hates thunderstorms and fireworks and most things that make a ruckus especially during one of the aforementioned cherished naps. He does not enjoy 17-hour car rides no matter how many times you try to make him. Finn does not enjoy it when anyone, even cute little toddlers, walk within the invisible parameter he deems his property. This will cause him to bark and when you run away scared he will whine because he also hates to lose a potential friend.
For about two months Finnegan was afraid of the subwoofer and would hide in the kitchen whenever he heard it turn on. He also does not like it when his pets (read Matt & Heather) slap their hands while trying to catch flies. This unnerves him greatly. He does not like for anyone to raise their voice or seem upset. This unsettles his very sweet and gentle nature. Finnegan does not like medicine and unless it is put in cheese he will eat everything around it leaving only the nasty pill in his mouth. As mentioned earlier, cheese is a particular weakness. He does not like dogs he considers to be too wild or too crazy. Only he is allowed to behave this way, thank you very much. He will boss these wild things until they behave as he intends. After all, he knows best.
