I am in love with these dogs!! Are their any breeders here? I'd love to see one up close and I know, from reading all the info about them, that I want one.

FYI, the German Coolie page has been temporarily locked. It will re-open in two days, on January 10th...time to give these dogs a much needed rest.
Respectfully, DoggyGal

Captain Cook arrived on the Endeavour, one ship, does not make a fleet, in 1770, the First Fleet didn't land until 18 years later and neither voyages
carried herding breeds of any kind. All facts pertaining to Captain Cooks only Voyage to Australia can be found in the Book H.M Bark Endeavour by Ray Parkin and many like it. And facts on the First Fleet, headed by Captain Phillip can be found in the book Australia's First Fleet by Jonathan King which included the complete human manifests for all eleven ships of the Fleet, which proves that no free settlers arrived on either voyages. The only dogs which were mention were Josephs Banks, which were a couple of male gun dogs, he accompanied Captain Cook.

The presumtion that the dogs that arrived on the first fleet were herding or collie type dogs is pure poetic licence, the manifest for the cargo does not stipulate any breed or in fact that they were mature dogs, it simply states "'puppies and kittens". There is every chance that they were of a ratting type such as terriers as ships were notoriously rat infested.
There is no evidence that the koolie descends from the Smithfield and to say the koolie didn't adapt to the outback and were too large and cumbersome could only be stated by someone who doesn't know koolies or has never experienced seeing one work in these situations. It is quite common for a koolie to continue working in these environments while the kelpies pack it in and head for the shade. These people are probably ensconced in suburbia thinking up ways to sell pups or books.
