Japanese Spitz
Short History of the Breed
Everything about the Japanese Spitz strongly suggests that it is simply a small version of the Samoyed. Creation of the breed commenced in the late 1800s. Very popular in Japan in the 1950s, and although numbers in the native land have declined, it has become increasingly popular in Europe and North America.Physical Description & Size
It is roughly 30-36cm and between 5 and 6kg. The Japanese Spitz are always white in colour. The ears are small and pointed upright. The Japanese Spitz face is wedged shaped and it has oval shaped eyes.Temperament
The Japanese Spitz has a friendly temperment though some can be wary of strangers. They have a loud, high pitched bark. This breed learns quickly as long as the owner is always consistent.Dog Care (exercise, grooming, diet)
This breed can live as a house dog as ong as it gets a moderate daily walk and regular chances to run freely. It can also live as an outdoor dog as long as it has plenty of shelter and company. It needs to be groomed regulary to prevent matting of its thick coat. It does not like the heat and does well in a temperate climate. This dog does well on dry dog food and its teeth need regular cleaning.Health Issues, Life Expectancy
This breed hasn't got any inherited health issues and usually lives up to 14 years.AKC Group

The origin of the JS is not conclusive. One hypothesis says that JS could indeed be descended from the Samoyed. But it's the least reliable. More likely JS are descended from the German Spitz or the American Eskimo. Apparently DNA tests are currently being done to verify. But as of now, no one really knows the true ancestry. Check out Michael Piasentin's book "The Japanese Spitz" for more info.
