Jumping Up on People
A common problem with puppies is that they love to get attention, so they learn to jump up on people. After all, if you're small, cute and fuzzy, who can resist reaching down and giving you all the attention that you're looking for?
Of course, the problem is, if you don't teach your pup early on that jumping up on people is not allowed, pretty soon, you'll have a large dog jumping up on people. The first step in changing this behavior, is to realize that when your dog jumps up on you, he or she is looking for attention. If you give your dog attention, then this is only going to reinforce the behavior.
Here is a technique that you can use to stop this behavior. Try ignoring your dog when he or she jumps up on you. This means not talking or reacting to your dog in any way. Do not tell him "no" or reprimand him. The best approach is to give him no attention at all. In fact, you should turn your back on your dog and ignore your pet completely for a short period of time (use your judgment here). When you turn around, if your dog does not jump up, praise and pet lavishly. If your pet continues to jump up, repeat this process until he gets it right.
It takes time and patience to train your pal, but eventually, your dog will learn what is expected of him. When you have guests over, consistency is the best policy, so if you can get them to follow this routine, you'll have a well behaved dog in no time!
