Key WestThis is a featured page

_____
For a city of its size (just 2 miles by 4 miles), Key West has a lot to offer. In addition to its abundance of water activities, there are numerous galleries and museums and a large number of shops, especially of the t-shirt variety as you get closer to Duval Street. There are also more than 300 eating (and drinking) establishments which feature everything from fresh local seafood and steaks to sandwiches and bar fare. And the best part is that many of the restaurants in Key West have outdoor dining areas where your dog can sit at your feet. Try Pepe's Bar and Restaurant, Louie's Backyard, or Turtle Kraals if you're bringing the pooch with you.

Special Events:

Fantasy Fest Pet Masquerade & Parade

An official event of Key West's famous Fantasy Fest. (October) This is a MUST SEE event - visit some websites for photos of past parades (look up "pet masquerade" in google).

Kayak with your dog! with Lazy Dog Outfitters Kayak Company

Best parks/walks:

  • When you're in Key West, you have to take your pooch to Dog Beach. It's on the corner of Waddell and Vernon Avenue, just south of South Street.

The beach is quite small (only about fifty by a hundred feet), but it is packed with local dogs and their quirky owners. While you're chatting it up with the locals about the best place to get a bite to eat or catch a fish, your dog can swim, chase birds, and horse around with the other pups. Just be careful here if your dog is a fighter. Everyone is off leash.

After you, or the dog, are all tuckered out head next door to the Afterdeck Bar at Louie's Backyard. As long as the dog has dried off and is leashed, you'll both be allowed to have a bite to eat or drink at the waterfront bar.

  • Higgs Beach, White Street Pier & Dog Park

The dog park is a great place to let your canine run free! There is even a separate area just for small dogs but all are welcome in the large park. Dog Park is located at Higgs beach across the street from a local's favorite, White Street Pier. The AIDS Memorial, the local bocce ball courts, East Martello Museum and Indiginous Park are all located right in this area. Take a walk with your pet and visit most of the sites together! Remember, its very hot in Key West; give your pet plenty of water and never leave your pet unattended.

Dog Friendly Dining:

Geiger Key Pub & Grill - Kayaking too!

This is a dog friendly restaurant/bar. The beer is kept on ice so its always cold. No, its not the best food or service; orders are placed through an opening in the bar wall the old fashioned way - "Order up!" The waitresses have to listen for their names called out by the cook when the order is ready - yes there is a bell but... the employees are used to serving locals only and know most of the bar customers by name, drink and preferred food order.

So what is the allure? Atmosphere! This place is accessible by shallow draft boat and has one of the best areas to go kayaking. Kayaks are available by an independent business located right on the property (ask for Jason). You will not be dissappointed with your surroundings.
