The left about turn can sometimes cause a few problems with the handler actually falling over their dog. The pace should be slowed just before the turn, the lead shortened, Say the dog’s NAME – give the COMMAND ‘BACK’ (or left), swing your right leg in front to stop forward movement and turn your body back the way you came causing the dog to reverse direction on itself.

I also believe it is also worthwhile teaching your dog to also walk on your right, this is extremely important in agility, as quite often you need to work with the dog on this side. Likewise, if you live in a rural area where there are no pavements, the accepted practice is to walk at the side of the road so as to face oncoming traffic, therefore placing the dog on the outside (in the UK). In this situation I much prefer to have the dog on the inside between the hedge and me. An alternative command is needed. I use the German word for ‘Heel’ which is ‘Fuss’ (foose) easy to pronounce and will not be confused with any other command and unlikely to be used out of context. If you are using a check chain remember to reverse it. This also has the advantage that my dog knows that when it is on this side it is not ‘working’ and that it is OK to sniff the hedgerow etc. But the dog is still not allowed to pull.
