Lisa Haynes

Rescuer of the Month, October, 2006

Lisa Haynes,

Save Our Strays Lisa & Thor

Vermont.

Lisa Haynes is founder of the Vermont-based group, Save our Strays. Involved with over 1500 pet placements, the founder of this all-volunteer group recently drove her van from the mountains of Vermont to Newark N.J to rescue 11 dogs & 4 cats/kittens whose "time was up" at a shelter. She made the 14 hour round trip alone, and placed each of these pets into loving forever adoptive homes back in Vermont.

Here's more about Lisa:

CAC Member / Wrestler Lisa Haynes Makes National News Headlines

Lisa HaynesShe was on her way to a wrestling match for a July 4th Ft. Lauderdale, Florida show when the dog-gone beginning of this story really started. Lisa Haynes, known professionally as Lisa the Adjuster noticed a stray dog panting on the side of the street. She passed by, but had immediate second thoughts and turned around to check the stray's condition. The dog appeared not only thirsty but frightened, undernourished, weak and missing some fur as well. As long as she could remember, Lisa held a special place in her heart for lost or injured animals, so she took it home, intending to give it a drink and seek some assistance for it. She called nearly two dozen "animal care" agencies, and did not get a single offer of help. Frustrated, she decided to take it to her own pooch's veterinarian. He diagnosed the stray as suffering from malnourishment, fleas, tapeworms and sarcoptic mange. Not accepting the doctor's recommendation of euthanasia, Lisa took the dog home and was determined to do the best she could. After several hundred dollars of medical care and several weeks of TLC, flea dips, medication and special nutritional home cooked meals, "Shep" seemed to be making a comeback! With much perseverance, Shep was nursed back to health and a loving home was found for her. Now four years later, Shep is named "Alf", and weights a healthy, happy 85 pounds. Lisa now resides in rural Vermont, where she has founded "S.O.S.", Save Our Strays Association -- a safe haven and sometimes retirement home for lost animals. She continues to be motivated by the belief that every kid, school or hospital had a furry companion -- the world would be a better place.

Lisa trained to become a professional wrestler in the late 1980s, and worked the independent circuits in Southern Florida, North Carolina and Boston. She worked for people like Randy Powell, Bob Roop, Rusty Brooks, and Killer Kawalski.

I'll always be grateful for Lisa for bringing Tiki (aka Hobo) into my life. Tiki lived on the street with a homeless man and Lisa got him skinny and flea infested. He came to me cleaned up and on the road to trusting humans again. He is an incredible addition to my family.
Thanks Lisa!

Thanks Lisa for all you do for dogs. We went to you to look at Sally Mae. As beautiful as she is, she was too big for us. But you gave us hope to keep looking. We found our love in Quechee. His name is Piper.
Thanks,
Joan & John

My husband and I adopted a dog from S.O.S. a few months ago. We were thrilled with the level of care and love that each animal was receiving. Congrats to Lisa and her husband for years of hard work - they have made a world of diiference in so many peoples and animals lives. Your efforts will never be forgotten!

I adopted an ancient dog from S.O.S. last October. He had been mistreated and neglected but Lisa sheltered him, took care of his mange, and got him back on his feet. Thanks to her work, O.T had a good year of care and kindness. sd, essex, ma
