These cute, white toy dogs epitomize the image of a glamorous and pampered lap dog. Maltese make great companions, particularly for owners who want to shamelessly spoil their dogs with love and affection.

Short History of the Breed

The Maltese breed dates back to ancient Greece, where it was believed to originate from Malta. The modern Maltese was bred in Italy from miniature spaniels and poodles. The breed was then brought to England during the Crusades, and quickly became popular with women, who would carry the dogs in their sleeves.

The Maltese was recognized by the AKC in 1888 and since then has consistently been one of the most popular pets in the United States.

Physical Description & Size

The AKC standard states that the Maltese should weigh less than 7 pounds with 4 to 6 pounds preferred. However, many Maltese tend to weigh above the standard. They are hardy dogs with a signature straight silky white coat and long pendant ears. When walking, Maltese can appear to float on the ground under a cloud of white hair.

Temperament

Maltese are typically vigorous, affectionate, and spirited dogs. They are highly intelligent dogs, are easily trained, and will happily do tricks to show off (with the right incentive, of course). They are also fearless dogs and will fight to protect what is theirs.

Maltese can be nippy and snap at children or other animals and do best in a child-free single-pet household.

Dog Care (exercise, grooming, diet)

The Maltese is an excellent apartment dog, assuming they are trained not to bark excessively. They do not tolerate extreme heat or cold well, and prefer to dwell indoors.

Maltese typically do not each much and a high-quality diet is necessary to ensure the dog gets adequate nutrition from the small amount of food it consumes.

Grooming is an important part of responsible Maltese ownership, and these dogs benefit from daily brushing to keep the coat in peak condition. Baths are required as necessary, and many owners will leave the daunting task of tending to the thick, long white haired diva to a professional groomer.

The hair on the top of the head is often tied up in a topknot to keep it away from the eyes. Some pet owners opt to clip the hair short for easier and less time consuming grooming. The Maltese sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.

Health Issues, Life Expectancy

This breed is sensitive to many environmental factors, including sunburn, extreme weather conditions (excessive heat and cold). They are prone to upset stomachs and digestive problems, as well as eye and ear infections.

Usually a long-lived dog, many Maltese can live 15 years or more.
