Rescuing Spunky Monkey
Spunky Monkey is a Miniature Pinscher that I adopted from IMPS (Internet
Miniature Pinscher Services at MinPinRescue.org). I got him when he wasSpunky Monkey
about 4 months old. As a puppy he had been given to a woman who didn't really
want him. He got out one day and was hit by a car which caused a brain injury.
She didn't take him to the Vet until his brain stem had started swelling and then it
was to have him put to sleep. But the Vet saved him and gave him to IMPS in
Georgia. I saw him on their website and I drove from upstate SC on a cold winter
day in a pouring rain, to see him. It was 5 hours one way but we made it and
he was so cute that I adopted him right then and drove home with him. The brain
swelling affected his senses. He is blind, partially deaf, can't seem to smell or taste
like a normal dog and his balance is off. This causes him to whirl in one direction.
He whirls a little bit at home but it's most noticeable when he's nervous. Then he
can't stop. He gets along real well at our house and my other Miniature Pinscher
and 2 Italian (Miniature) Greyhounds seem to love him and watch out for him. It's
like they know he's handicapped and they've all learned how to play with him and
watch out for him. He is so brave and determined to be big boy that I named him
Spunky Monkey. He talks a lot with rumbles, yips, and barks. Some people
think he is growling at them but it's not mean. He's just talking. It's like he's
saying, "Hi, I'm Spunky Monkey. Be careful with me because I'm blind. I will
take a little petting but don't take me out of my Mommy's arms." And he can hear
better some days than others. I have a routine and he knows it and knows when
it's time to eat and where his food will be and where the water dishes are. If we
are out of the routine then he will only eat if Mommy hand feeds him because he
doesn't seem to be able to decide whether it's food or not. That is why I'm not
sure if he can smell or taste. He mouths his food, drops it, noses it, picks it back
up, drops it again, etc. It takes him forever to eat but once he decides it's something
to eat he gobbles it down. He is now 3 yrs old and I've had him for 2 1/2 of these
years. He's one of my little darlings!
