Short History of the Breed

Elkhounds have been around a LONG time. The dog was used by Scandinavians to hunt big game of the Northern Hemisphere, particularly elk ('elk' is moose in Norwegian). With a keen sense of smell, endurance, and the ability to quick bursts of speed, the breed is an excellent hunting animal. Working alone or with teams of other Elkhounds, the dog tracks its target and effectively corrals it until the hunter can arrive to finish the deal.

Physical Description & Size

The Norwegian Elkhound is a medium sized dog that is usually grey in appearance. Distinctive attributes include a broad head, pricked ears, and a tightly curled tail that rests over the back. The dog's coat is dense and smooth.

Temperament

Since the dog is a hunting dog at heart, it is a very couragous dog. As it's used to hunting big game in harsh conditions, Elkhounds can be very determined and somewhat stubborn. They can also be very energetic. Combined with their love of roaming, they can easily get misplaced. They are very good guardians when necessary but more often than not are a very friendly breed.

Dog Care (exercise, grooming, diet)

Elkhounds are very athletic so frequent exercise is necessary. Without exercise, they tend to have weight issues as they are voracious eaters. They are prone to hip dyspasia (what dog isn't?!?).

Health Issues, Life Expectancy

An Elkhound that is well-cared for can easily live 10 to 15 years.
