Owning a Dog can be Healthy for You!This is a featured page

Did you know that owning a dog can be good for your health? Studies show that dog owners can reap many health benefits from their loving companions.

No doubt, our fuzzy buddies offer us constant companionship, loyalty and undying affection. Because of this steady influence on our lives, many studies have shown that dog owners tend to have lower anxiety levels, lower blood pressure and better heart rates. Some studies have even shown that dog owners can have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than non-dog owners with similar dietary and lifestyle habits.

CharlieDogs offer us an excuse and opportunity to exercise. They make wonderful walking or jogging companions. With their big, soulful eyes, they have an innate ability to coax even the busiest owner to come outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Perhaps the biggest benefit to owning a dog is the unprecedented loyalty and companionship that a dog can offer. During the most trying and stressful of times, you can always count on your pet to stand by your side, listen to your problems, and offer much needed affection. Conversely, in the best of times, your dog is there to share in your joy and is always willing to join in on any festivities. There is nothing like having a friend to the end, and from this comes the stress-reducing health benefits of owning a pet.

Dog ownership is also an important development tool for children, as they are able to learn many of life lessons by owning a pet. Children can learn about love, compassion, responsibility, and the fragility of life through owning a pet. This faithful friend can give a child greater self-esteem and confidence, and can make a lasting lifelong impression on a child.

All in all, owning a dog is a lot of responsibility. It’s a lot of commitment, but it’s definitely a two way street. A dog needs plenty of love and attention, but will always give you back much more in return!

I have spent the better part of this year taking care of a loved one who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. My teacup chihuahua, "Mia"tagged along with me each day as part of the caregiving process. She immediately bonded with his cat, and added daily smiles and chuckles that broke up his usual routine. My daughter gave her to me last year as an early Christmas gift from a breeder in Idaho. Mia was only 8 weeks old and could fit in the palm of my hand. She just turned one year old this month, but still remains quite small...she only weighs 3 lbs. I never would have thought I'd be the type to own a lap dog, but here I am with the most wonderful animal on the planet. She's been house-trained and paper trained for over six months, and she's very obedient, not to mention lovable. Mia goes everywhere with me, and dresses up for every occasion. (she has over 30 outfits)

When my loved one entered a Hospice facility in July, Mia was invited to visit him daily. In the process, I couldn't make it down the hall to his room without relatives of other patients begging me to bring Mia in to see their loved one. Thus, an idea was born, and I have now started my own business. "Mindy & Mia, Partners in Pampering" - Unique TLC for Humans. Mia and I are due tol become official Hospice Volunteers as soon as we complete our certification.

Everyone at Hospice was so great when my loved one was there, that I really wanted to give something back. I was laid off from position as Head Writer for a multimedia firm last October, and have not been able to obtain a position in my field of expertise since. I am excited to embark on this new adventure with Mia. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would give up a career in writing to work with a chihuahua, but the rewards have been absolutely priceless.
