When I meet a new guy, I always have to introduce him to my dog, Maddy. She's usually very well behaved and relaxed, but gets hyper around men she doesn’t know. To me, it’s obvious that Maddy is submissive and looking for approval. But to the guy, it’s always more like my dog has ADD and early stages of rabies (the craziness part, before the attack instincts set in).
It’s embarrassing to explain to a guy why your dog wets herself every time he makes eye contact with her. I find myself in a position of apologizing for Maddie, but also closely scrutinizing the guy’s reactions. Is he compassionate and patient? Does he have a good sense of humor? Does he realize there are things in life much worse than a needy, insecure dog? I’ve learned that if a guy freaks out when there’s dog hair stuck to his black sweater, chances are we’re not soul mates. And it’s for reasons way beyond the fact that he likes black sweaters and I have a huge hairy dog. |
