www.gotpetsonline.comShort History of the Breed

This dog was brought to Portugal by Spanish.
It helped Portugese fisherman do many tasks, like carry messages between ships and drag out fishing nets. This dog was recently (last 60 years or so) replaced by machines. This dog was revived from almost being extinct by one breeder.

Physical Description & Size

Males run 45-60 pounds, and tend to have either curly or wavy hair (as opposed to fur). This means that they do not shed but require frequent brushing to avoid tangles. Females run 10-20 percent smaller. The primary colors tend to be black or brown, however white spots appear on many and some end up looking like shaggy dalmations. Others can be combinations of white with black, white with brown, black with white, or brown with white. However, solid black and brown are most common. In Portugal, dogs with any white are disqualified from the show ring, but white in the US is very popular. Dogs can even be shades of gray or copper, but these are slightly more rare. Even rarer is the elusive solid white PWD.

Temperament

Very gregarious breed that enjoys human interactions and physical conduct. Truly wants to please. Very intelligent, with a keen ability to learn. Many owners brag about potty training within a day.

As with most medium breeds, PWD need regular exercise and will exhibit boredom and lathargy without regular exercise. Some breeders selects PWDs that have a lower energy level. As noted above PWD's require regular brushing to avoid tangles in their hair. They do not shed, however. The curly coat, as opposed to the wavy coat, requires more care as the hair tends to knot up a bit more. Typical other regular maintenance includes brushing teeth, trimming nails, and regular visits to the vet. Since the breed has been very carefully monitored, there are few hereditary problems, but you should inquire with your breeder. The dogs train well to cages, however, they also like to be treated like large lap dogs and thus may do well with their own bed in a room corner.

Health Issues, Life Expectancy

The breeding of this dog is carefully monitered to ensure that health problems are not bred. Unlike common breeds like Labs, PWDs must go through many tests before deemed good enough to breed. They can live between 10 and 14 years.

AKC Group

This breed is in the working group. However it is not recognized by the English Kennel Club.
