Profile: Phyllis Thompson, Champion Dog Breeder

wikiFido is proud to present expert dog traning advice from champion pug breeder, Phyllis Thompson:

Phyllis's 8 pugs earned 21 titles in less than 10 years - 8 CD's, 7 CDX's, and 6 UD's. Almost all qualifying scores were placements. Most were first places. Phyllis' pugs also earned several High-In-Trials - highest scoring dog from all the classes on that particular trial day. Five times over the years, one or another has also been the number one obedience pug in the country.

Phyllis trains in tiny increments to insure success and build confidence. Although pugs are highly food motivated, food treats are used as a lure in beginning basic training, then as a very random reward. In other words, training - both pet and competition obedience - is definitely not food-dependent, but is based on the dog/person relationship. And it is a most beautiful relationship, for dog and trainer become joined at the heart.
