Puppy's first night home - Dogs & Dog Rescue
The very first night you bring your puppy home is going to be a difficult for him. This is probably his first night away from his mother and/or siblings. He's going to be feeling insecure, afraid, and also missing his canine family. With a little patience (and lots of love) this can be a great bonding experience for you to get your relationship with your new dog off to a great start.

Suggestions for puppy's first night home:

  • Items for puppy to sleep with: a hot water bottle and a ticking clock. Why? they both simulate litter mates (warmth and a heartbeat). Just make sure the water bottle is not too hot-- 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit is best.

  • As tempting as it is to show off your new puppy right away, resist the urge! Too many new people, smells, and sounds can be overwhelming for the puppy

  • If at all possible, try to bring something like a blanket or toy from puppy's old home to yours. The familiar smell will be comforting and help him relax.

  • Get a collar and identification tag on your puppy right away! The first night he'll be especialy confused and may try to find a way back to his old home if he gets loose. Don't procrastinate, get an id tag on your puppy immediately!
  • Always leave fresh water during the night, half the time your puppy might be crying is because it's thirsty!
