With the dog on a lead and walking by your side (at Heel) the handler, says the dog’s NAME, gives the COMMAND ‘COME’ and at the same time starts walking backwards, repeating the Command and praising the dog as it follows. COMPULSION is minimal and only with the lead if and as necessary - control is mainly by encouragement and holding the dog’s attention. If the dog starts jumping up at you give the command ‘NO’ in a firm voice, but be careful that you do not discourage the dog from following you. If the dog just stands there when you start to back away and just won’t budge, don’t be tempted to ‘drag’ him along. This not only will not teach him it will positively put him off. In this situation use a treat, favourite toy, lighten your tone of voice and get your dog excited. Should he now start to jump up, tolerate it until he is happy to follow you then start to correct this problem. At the beginning don’t worry too much about the ‘sit’, as you come to the end of the backward walk, just make sure to give him lots of Praise.

Progress!

The tug on the lead is the message to your dog that tells him which direction you want him to move, and that you DO want him to move. Soon enough, the dog will be beating your tug after he hears the word “COME!” – THAT is when you know he is starting to understand what “COME!” means!
