Saint BernardShort History of the Breed

The Saint Bernard originated from Swiss monks around the 12th century. Later, they were cross bred with a Newfoundland, which resulted in the long haired breed that we commonly recognize today. Other names include the Alpine Mastiff, the Mountain Dog and the Barry Dog. These other names came from the most famous Saint Bernard, Barry, born around the year 1800, who saved about 40 people within 10 years. Thus, Saint Bernards have earned the reputation for being rescue dogs.


Physical Description & Size

St. Bernard's have a massive skull with a short muzzle and drop ears thrown forward. They may have a long or short coat. They are majestic and powerful, with males about 27 1/2 inches tall and about 165 pounds, and females 25 1/2 inches tall, about 145 pounds.

Temperament

Many people know the great Saint Bernard as a large, rescue dog, deep in the snowy mountains. This dog has a good disposition, who needs to be with people throughout it's life.

Dog Care (Exercise, Grooming,Diet)

The dog is known for excessive shedding and drooling. Needs a large area for exercise, due to its massive size.

Health Issues, Life Expectancy

A generally healthy dog, subject to hip dysplasia. Also, possible hot-spot skin conditions, prone to arthritis, congenital heart defects, eyelid defects and rage syncrome.
