Bay Area Veterinary Specialists - 14790 Washington Ave l San Leandro, CA 94578lPhn 510.483.7387 (PETS) - absolutely worth the commute, given what's at stake. I've met people there who've driven their pets from Campbell and San Jose. Primarily, I've worked with Doug Rohn (surgery) and Cecile Siedlecki (oncology). In profoundly stressful times, it has always been reassuring for me to receive transparent and lucid, unrushed assessments of treatment protocols, possible consequences and costs, always in a thorough but compassionate condition without a sense of ulterior motive. motive(s).

Doug and Cecile are really wonderful people, and I have to credit them with being very good at working with both patients and clients. I don't know anywhere else where I would have gotten 90-minute surgical consultations with no real promise to them of an actual transaction - all while sitting together on the floor with the patient-to-be. The other thing is that the facility is a 24-hour one, and, also critically, that both the day and night practices are owned by the same group. Compared with all of the other places I've used over the past six years in the Bay Area, the fact that the ownership is consolidated means much reduced risk of miscommunication, and also seamlesss billing and accounting - a hassle no one would appreciate in a time of stress.

(A note about Cecile Siedlecki, upon whom I decided after interviewing several oncologists. I have a dog with hemangiosarcoma. It's not a friendly cancer at all. Median survival after diagnosis and surgery is sixty-seven days. Of course, one can't attribute causality robustly, nor make any warranties or guarantees, but it's noteworthy that it is day 348 as I write this, and we're just about to head out for a six-mile run in the Berkeley Hills.)
