SchipperkeShort History of the Breed

Schipperkes originated in Belgium, and a lot of written history suggest that they were bred to guard the barges on the canals and that their name should mean "Little Skipper". Futher research has revealed that the name actually should mean "Little Shepherd" and that they originally was bred as an small allround dog to help at the farms because the Belgians were not allowed to keep bigger dogs by the Spanish ruler.

Physical Description and Size

15-20 pounds is normal, although smaller sometimes happens. Females are small than males. They are all black with a foxy face and usually the tails are docked at birth.
