Short History of the Breed
The breed was originally used for hunting birds and even wild boar.

Physical Description & Size
Many people think the Shiba Inu looks like a fox. It has a similar build and facial structure and a fluffy tail. Shibas come in three primary coats--red, red sesame, black/tan, and cream. The shibas are a smaller breed. They tend to range from about 13" tall to 16" tall in the males. Their weight can range from 15lb to 25lb.
Temperament
Shibas tend to be a little aloof. They like people, but they also like their independence. Some shibas can be quite shy around people. Shibas are quite intelligent but sometimes display some stubborness.Dog Care (exercise, grooming, diet)
Shibas like to run around, but because of their size, they find ways of doing so in even small spaces. They are both good diggers and climbers, so keep an eye on them even in fenced-in areas.
They require regular brushing and occasional baths to accelerate their seasonal shedding (shibas have a double coat and they "blow" their coat about twice a year).
Diet should consist of a high quality commercial food.
Health Issues, Life Expectancy
Shibas tend to be a healthy breed can can live very long lives (upwards of 15 years). Check for signs of patellar luxation (loose kneecaps) as this is one frequent syndrome found in the breed. Another possible health problem with the breed can be hip dysplasia.AKC Group
