SHIMMER Shimmer is an Australian Koolie currently living in Queensland, she is 5 Months old at the moment and our first Koolie (although I've wanted one as long as I can remember). I originally come from NSW and my family has had Cattle farms all over northern NSW and now Southern Queensland, I live in surburbia though and find these dogs to be great loyal companion dogs as well as working dogs I never imagined them to be tougher than any other dog until I got Shimmer, she loves to run and catch things at the park and we could spend all day and night there easily.
We have a 10 Year Old Bassett Hound named Bailey (Kinkiwi Fatty Arbuckle) who is my oldest dog so far. He loves Shimmer so much... I don't think I've ever seen him run so fast to catch upto anything, and at his age he should probably slow down but we're not going to stop him. Shimmer's name was very elusive for a time we didn't know what to call her, every name we could think of just didn't suit her. Her breeder has nicknamed her "Freckles" and that very nearly became her name, until I got fed up with her disappearing all the time to chase things and suddenly reappearing right behind me (as a good herding dog should ^_^). We later discovered her love of all things shiny and reflective as she likes to look at herself in the mirror from time to time and named her Shimmer. She would make an excellent Herder when and if I decide to test her but for now she's just happy being a house pet with poor retired Bailey my first show dog.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, that was Shimmer when she was 3 Months old but now she's a little bigger , getting new teeth, growing stronger, faster and finally sleeping outside with Bailey... but more importantly chasing that elusive rubber kong ball.
"Did you see my Ball move? I thought it did..."
"You Rang?"
"Bigger than Bailey... Not quite as big as the Rocking Horse...Yet."
"You said to bring you the Sheep... Is this one good enough?..." Shimmer's Trick List:
Is sorted from first trick learnt to the latest, and the Command word followed by the description of that Command.
Hopefully this will give you an idea of how smart these dogs are, Shimmer managed to learn the first 6 Commands in about a month and performs them every time. I'm constantly coming up with new commands to teach her and games for her to play to keep her occupied whilst I'm at work. Like meat or treats in Ice (I often give them to Bailey my now 11yr Old Bassett Hound who is mostly black and has a hard time in the Summer) got the Idea from visiting Seaworld one year where they gave ice blocks as big as a bucket to the polar bears for stimulation and to make it harder for them to get food instead of feeding them out of a bucket every day.
Sit - Sit wherever you are
Stay - Stay where you are
Lie - Lay down wherever you are
Go To Bed - Go to your Mat and lie down (Most Koolie Sites say this is the first thing you should teach them)
Away - Run off some distance and wait for further Instruction almost the same as the Release/Free command
Get the Ball - Find a Ball (wherever it may be) and bring it to me = to Fetch. (Also works for some other toys)
Home - Go Home, is useful when she's escaped the yard and is too far away to catch (She loves to Run...)
In - Get inside (used either for the Car or the House, on the rare occasion she's allowed inside)
Out - Get Out (also used for the Car and the House)
Catch - Catch the Item thrown (often Includes jumping, made Fetch a little more Interesting for her)
Drop It - Put whatever you are holding on the ground. (Still has trouble letting go of her Ball though)
Hold - Take whatever I have in my hand and carry it. (E.g. Ball home from park, Blanket/Favourite Toy to bed)
To Dad - Go to my Fiancee (Shim's Adopted Dad) with whatever you have. Usually used after Hold but is useful if I have something dangerous I don't want her around, like floor cleaner... or the Broom.
To Mum - Go to Nexus (Shim's Adopted Mum), and same as above (usually used by my fiancee though)
Negative Commands - We try and keep them few as possible.
Bad - No, that is Naughty or Wrong thing to do
Down - Don't Jump up (After Fiancee insisted she jump up to greet him)
Enough - Stop Barking and move away from the Gate. (Koolie's are excellent Guard Dogs)
Shimmer's Games and Recipes:Ice Blocks -
Bailey's Favourite Toy, as mentioned above they work like Kid's popcicles you put chunks of raw meat, treats or even toys in a bowl or container, fill with water or gravy, and freeze it. Next you take it outside (It can be Messy) and slide it out onto the grass to let your pet lick it and slide it around, it'll keep them amused for hours and is a great way to cool down on hot days. Also a good alternative for that fattening Icecream! I don't recommend using Kibble or biscuits though they usually swell up and become all soggy, eww.
Fetch -
Classic game, we like to play in a grassy feild near our house makes it a little more interesting as the ball often gets lost in the knobbly grass and pot holes and takes awhile to find. I recommend using brightly coloured balls in this situation as it helps when your pet has no idea where the ball has gone or for Nightime fun. Shimmer's Favourite Colour is Orange we use Rubber Kong balls as well. Which bounce like Tennis balls and usually have the same texture although you can get ones like basket balls of every colour and size, I find they're alot less dangerous than the commercial Tennis balls and about the same price and because they're rubber they're easier to clean and they float!!
