As summer approaches, so do temperatures in the triple digits. How will this affect our pets?

United States of America (Press Release) April 7, 2008 -- Higher temperatures can lead to a number of health and safety problems for you, your pets, and others. The Most prevalent of these problems are heatstroke, dog bites, and insect/snake bites.

First, heatstroke, although commonly associated to workers in the summer, can afflict our pets as well as us. Heat strokes occur when the body’s natural mechanisms of heat loss are overwhelmed. Symptoms include heavy panting, increased heart rate, weakness, vomiting or diarrhea. Heat stroke can lead to shock, coma and even death.

Heat stroke can afflict both dogs and cats. Short-muzzled dogs such as Pekinese, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, Boxers and Pugs are most prone. Dogs and cats that are obese, geriatric or suffer from heart conditions are also at risk.
