Keep training sessions short
Fido has a short attention span, and can get bored easily. It’s better to have short frequent training sessions, rather than one long one. This will help reinforce the behavior.Praise generously and reward with small treats
If your dog exhibits the correct behavior, lavish her with praise and don’t forget a small treat! After your dog consistently exhibits the correct behavior, the goal is to taper off on the treats and stick with the praise.Be consistent
Don’t confuse your dog by varying the wording of the command you are trying to teach. Always use the same command.Don’t mix commands
If you’ve taught your dog “sit” and “down”, don’t confuse her by saying “sit down”.Be patient with older dogs
Older dogs take more time and patience to train than younger dogs. They just have to unlearn old behavior first, so be patient!Use your dog's name in a positive way
Never use your dog's name when you are angry or scolding them. If they associate thier name with being in trouble then they will be less hesitant to come to you when you call them.

My 9 year old found a great treat for training. Cheerios! They are low in sugar, inexpensive and come thousands in a box. You can train for a long session without overfeedind the dog with expensive unhealthy dog treats. The generics work just as well, mine love the honey nut flavored! The great Dane goes ape over a little tiny oaty-O, it's funny!
