Short History of the Breed

The Treeing Walker is a descendant of the English Foxhound, which Thomas Walker imported to Virginia in 1742. Sometime in the 1800's, a dog known as "Tennessee Lead," a stolen dog of unknown origin, was crossed into the Walker Hound. He was a powerful dog, excelling in game sense, drive and speed, and having a clear, short-chop mouth. The Treeing Walker was not recognized as its own breed until 1946. This direct lineage brings us this efficient hunter. This coonhound has retained the looks of its ancestors, the English Foxhound. An underlying sense of game coupled with untiring speed and manly drive makes this coonhound unstoppable. The coonhound lineage doesn't really stop at the Walker, for American hunters also employ other varieties as well. One such coonhound is known as the Running Walker. The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an efficient and reliable hunter of raccoons, squirrels, and possums. The Treeing Walker "trees" its prey, and can then sometimes virtually climb the tree to get at it. With a little training, however, it will merely bay its distinctive howl, telling the hunter that the prey has been cornered.

Very intellegent animal. Learns by example. Very eager to please. Can be a heavy chewer, if bored. Best idea to keep a lot of balls, rawhides, and dog puzzles to entertain them. Can become destructive if not taught proper manners.

The Treeing Coonhound is good with children and gets along with other dogs. Training is accomplished with little trouble, as these dogs are able to learn from example. They are primarily working and hunting dogs but will also make a great companion dog. Working, to the Treeing Walker Coonhound, is not work but a sport and diversion. They thrive on consistent and ample attention. High-strung but loving and eager to please, the Treeing Walker is intelligent, skilled and confident. Some say they are the best breed for coonhound field trials because of their speed, ability to locate quickly and good treeing ability. They are swift with a very good sense of smell and a distinctive howl. Socialize at a young age.

PLEASE CROSSPOST!!
Please do not post on Craigs List or similar sites
The Jessamine County SAVE Center is VERY overcrowded! We desperately need some help! The SAVE Center has 90 dogs and is expecting more this week. The vet is coming Wed 8/26 to euthanize because we are so overcrowded.
Please look to see if there is any you can help. This is just a small number of the many dogs we have available for adoption/rescue. If you can't help, please at least take a moment to forward this.
Remember: vet fees are discounted, there are no pull fees for *approved* rescues, we can usually help with transporting dog(s) to Lexington or Louisville. (we do not coordinate transports)To be approved, we need your vet contact info, a shelter reference if possible, your website, and a brief statement about your spay/neuter policies.
Any questions, email Jenise at smithszoo62@ yahoo.com
Thank you!

eakgarrigus Treeing walker hound needs help in Statesboro GA 4 Jul 5 2009, 11:55 AM EDT by meyati

Hello there,
One of my tenants has found a male treeing walker hound. I know this because I had him checked out at the vets today and one of the techs is from VA and has one. He is about 2/3 years old and amazingly friendly. I do fostering here in Statesboro, Ga with the local humane society and I am a property manager of the pet friendly rentals. I have had him around children, other dogs and cats and not a cross bark out of him. He is very well socialized and quite the sweetie. He doesn’t like being left outside…just wants to be inside with you. The tenant that brought him in found him last week and we have checked everywhere to see if he was lost but looks like abandoned.
Since I have 5 dogs, 6 cats, a parrot and a lizard-I am maxed out!!
Got him his shots today and checked over-he is 73 pds a bit underweight probably due to the hookworms. He is also heartworm positive. Got him started on heartworm meds, flea and de-wormed.
I am hoping that someone can help me get him adopted or possibly foster him.
Please let me know if you can help out! I will help towards heartworm treatment if that is a requirement!
