Most shelters ask that volunteers dedicate just a few hours of their time each week to assist with shelter responsibilities. Each shelter has different needs, but here are some of the activities that require both hands-on and behind-the-scenes volunteer help:

• Taking dogs out for a daily walk or run
• Cleaning kennels and exercise yards and providing dogs with fresh food and water
• Bathing and grooming dogs
• Transporting dogs to foster homes or to vet appointments
• Assisting with matchmaking (dogs and owners) at adopt-a-thons or during shelter hours
• Educating the public about adoption and other animal welfare topics
• Providing general office help: answering phone queries, processing paperwork during intakes or adoptions, and washing towels and bedding

Perhaps your schedule is simply too busy to make a regular weekly commitment to an animal shelter, but you’d still like to help out. What else can you do to make a difference in a dog’s life?

• Make a financial donation to the shelter: The money often goes toward food and basic supplies, medical expenses for injured animals, or helps defray the costs of running the organization.
• Start a collection drive: Animal shelters are always in need of towels or blankets to use as temporary pet beds. Collect donations from co-workers or neighbors and drop them off at the shelter. Other desirable donations often include pet food and treats, chew toys, and food/water bowls. Check with your local shelter to see what is most needed.
• Send an email: Spread the word about upcoming adoption events by notifying everyone on your list. You just might connect a human with his or her ideal dog.
