Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

Short History of the Breed

Bred in Ireland.

Physical Description and Size

When they are born, wheatonswheatens are a black or dark brown in color. Their fur lightens up dramatically in their first year.Wheatonsyear. Wheatens have wheat to white colored hair when they are all grown up and it is somewhat curly. Males up to 40 lbs, females about 30-35lbs. They often have cute button noses. They have big, brown eyes that could melt your heart.

Temperament

They are terriers and have a mind of their own, Not necessarily for first time dog owners. Don't be fooled by their size, they have strong, sturdy bodies that can pull a grown man along for a short distance. WheatonsWheatens have very muscular legs and can jump almost three feet off the ground. Often they have to repeat doggie school to learn their manners well. A wheaten will listen best if there is something in it for him or her. But they are oh so loveable. And they love hanging out with their people. Wheatens are high energy dogsrequiredogs require a lot of love and attention. They are very devoted to their people and should be given a whole lot of love.

Dog Care A lot of time goes into a Wheaten.

They need to be groomed regularly. They have hair, not fur. Hair is continuously growing, and needs to be cut or groomed (combed) very often, or it gets matted and you then will have to shave your dog. If a wheaton's hair is left alone, without any haircuts or grooming, it will get matted. Once it is matted, the only way to get rid of the tangles is to cut them off. Usually, there is no special diet, except love. And of course, they need a daily walk.
(exercise, grooming, diet)

Health Issues and Life Expectancy

As a medium size dog, their life expectance is about 14 yrs.
