| Airedale Terrier | Miniature Schnauzer |
Terriers are quite energetic and territorial. They were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin. Given this temperament, they have a low tolerance for other animals, including dogs. Aside from their feisty personalities, terriers are known for the "wiry" coats. They also tend to be diggers, since they do lots of digging work in their working lives.

Terrier Rescue
Some unfortunate Terriers do need rescuing!
For perhaps the most compelling rescue treatise told by the dog's point of view, please take this moment to read How Could You? by Jim Willis. Pet lovers will cry and be even more dedicated to their beloveds. We will act as ambassadors of our breeds and mixes of choice. We may soften the hardest of hearts who do not understand the spirit and higher purpose of all God's creatures. Animal lovers must always remain dilligent stewards.
People may mistakenly fail to factor in the spirit and independence of these breeds and mixes. Terriers are not for everyone. Terriers are high energy and need mental stimulation or they become bored. Activities they may choose may be destructive. There is a saying, "A tired Terrier is a well-behaved Terrier."
Some breeds of Terriers and mixes are very misunderstood. The "Bully Type" breeds and mixes are especially unfairly labeled as aggressive by design. Through careful breeding practice for even temperament and specifically designed training Terriers will stay stable and constant.
Training is the key to a well behaved Terrier that is very capable of sweetness and make wonderful family dogs. Another saying paraphrased that is very relevant to Terriers, "There are no bad Terriers just irresponsible people with Terriers." Punish the Deed Not the Breed." Indeed!

Terrier Training Needs
Terriers by their very nature need formal training. When one considers adopting or obtaining a Terrier one must factor in the price and commitment necessary of family members to train these energetic Terriers as a team. Terriers love all the family but frequently bond more with one member.
Terriers excel with training designed for them. Specific Training for examples -- Socialization, Obedience, Field Events, and Athletic / Competitive training specifically for Earthdog and Agility activities all ideal to channel the high energy needs to positive ends.
