Roxie had her grooming yesterday and I promised a pic of her with the bumper. She doesn't mind it at all and I feel relaxed with it on her. BeforeI got the bumper, she did slip through the railing uprights, but I found her before she couldfall to the ground below whichwould not have been good.

Our little Bowser says thanks for the bumper! He is both smart enough and tiny enough to get through the the edges of the fence, but not anymore!!

My wife and I have a 5 month old Westie puppy named Lady McDuff (Duffy) who we refer to as Houdini... She is small enough to get through our back yard fence, so I put up a 20" high hard plastic mesh inside and at the base of the fence. After a week of labor to get the mesh in place, Duffy simply climbed up the mesh and squeezed through the upper portion of the fence and has continued to do so ever since... What is that they say about the best laid plans...

I was excited to see them on the website! We think they are prettycute, too! I have to tell you that Abby wore her bumper all weekend around the pool and it worked so well. She just loves the freedom she has and we don't have to worry at all about her getting out through the fence. I am so happy that I came across your product! It is wonderful.

If I am not mistaken, I saw a segment on the Today Show; But, to be honest with you, I did not buy the Puppy Bumper for my dogs (an Airedale and a Wired Hair Fox Terrier.) I adopted a cat from the humane society. (He is so beautiful that I knew he had to be a "breed"; ends up he is a "ragamuffin.") Unbelievable cat; thinks he's a dog and can "battle" with the dogs'; on the other hand, the sweetest little life that weighs 13 pounds, has white fur and eyes the color of the ocean. So, I bought the puppy bumper for a cat! The reason I needed the bumper was that Sam tends to "like to wander." I do not let him outside. One day, I was on the second floor of my house when I say Sam on theroof! I almost had a heart attack. The bedroom opens toa railed porch which, I didn't think he could fit outside of, but he did! Since that incident, we will not openthe French doors to the porch for fear of "losing"Sam. Now, the Puppy Bumper (alias Cat Bumper) has been the key to assuring that Sam is safe and that we can, once again, open the doors to the porch without fear of losing Sam.Great product; high quality work and Sam is fine wearing it. (Also, I tried it on my wired hair fox terrier and she was fine with wearing it; I just did it for fun, not necessity.) My dog's name: Jack

Hometown: Aberdeen, South Dakota and Fargo, ND

How we met: I had always wanted a dog, since I am an animal lover. I heard about a woman that wanted to give away a miniature dachshund because he clawed at her curtains like a cat, so I told my mom about the dog. The next day, I went out to the family farm and when I came back my mom came up from downstairs with the little dachshund puppy!

What makes my dog special: He's a funny little guy, and he loves to play. He loves just being a dog; being free, going for walks, playing fetch, and making his owner (me) proud to call him my dog. And about his name, I am a HUGE Johnny Depp fan, and I watched Pirates of The Caribbean with him the first day I got him. It gave me some inspiration to name him Jack after Johnny Depp's character.

My dog's likes/dislikes: He loves to lick everyone's faces and hands to tell them how much he loves them. He enjoys playing fetch,going to the lake , and playing in the backyard. He doesn't like baths, hair dryers, and the vet.

While Albuquerque, New Mexico has many wonderful things for dogs-the area seems to have more than its share of animal haters and many of the laws are Draconian or frivolous with serious penalties. It is illegal for a cat to sit in an open door way, while the owner putters around on the porch. A friend had to pay for the fine-take her cat to the vet to get a statement that the cat was too old to be spayed and micro-chipped. The poor cat died from stress after the vet visit. The city demanded that an autopsy be performed or face charges of animal cruelty. Because she had to take it back to the vet for the catopsy, she also had to pay for the cat to be legally disposed of. That was about $700 for an elderly music teacher. l believe that many people think that if they come to the Southwest or Rocky Mt area that they will not be bothered by anything. If anything bothers them, it can be like a gun fight-overkill to bring civilization to the Wild West.

Best walks: There are organized dog walks and dog costume events to raise money for animal rescue. The City of Albuquerque has an Internet site that lists these events and dog parks.

Wonderful dog walking areas. The city has open space areas that run from river bottom walks-high desert-forested mountains.
Albuquerque is a mile high +. In the city and crowded suburb areas, there are nice walking areas along arroyos-dry creeks- that have flash floods when it rains in the mountains, so never get off the safe walkway. A certain amount of druggies can be on these walkways-so be cautious.
The river walk has huge cottonwoods, water fountains, trash cans and benches. It also has several parking lots. It's well patrolled by the city police. The Open Spaces are on the east side of Albuquerque. The paths run from almost level to rolling hills to rock scrambles that hunting and herding breeds can easily navigate to forested mountain tops. The paths are of granite grit-so check your dog's paws after a hike. I buy a paw healing and conditioning cream from Internet hunting dog supply stores.
Get a rattlesnake venom shot for your dog. The Albuquerque Open spaces have the plague and and wild life. It is not a good idea to let your dog run. Dogs get infected fleas from small dead wild mice, etc.

Carry water-no water is available. I carry several collapsible water dishes.
Open spaces are run by the city, county, state and federal agencies-so some are free-the river walks-the south end of the mountains or if you have a federal parking permit. So carry a few dollars with you for parking. There aren't any vendors in these areas.
There is an awful lot of vehicle break-ins, so don't leave things in sight and pack things in your trunk or whatever before you load your dog up-
Some people just don't leash their dogs and they say, "It's just being friendly", so carry some Spray Shield-Animal Deterrent Spray to protect yourself and your dog. It works really well.
The cabanas for picnics seem to be a place for illicit sexual encounters-if you hear noises-go the opposite way. The city doesn't want to admit it-but the TV and newspapers carry stories about this on going problem.
Guns are illegal-so you have to use your dog repellent or pepper spray on a threatening person-Note: They try to run away and hide most of the time.
Clean up after your self and your dog, if you have to squat over a cactus. It's quite open-Open Spaces.
Is it worth it? Yes, it really is

Best dog parks: I've had vets tell me that these are a prime source of infections and emergency care. We have rattlesnakes here.

All dogs in the park must be off the leash-city ordinance.
The parks are small and some are overcrowded.
They have low fences and most are near freeways or fast moving major streets.
Many don't have water, shade or benches
Bloggers complain about dog maulings
Bloggers complain that the regulars are snobbish and won't help a mauled dog in any way.
There is one dog park that has an agility course. It has a low fence, is next to the dump, where everyone speeds. It's way out in the boonies. Police departments use it to train their dogs. Hey they have a few dozen cops to keep the K-9 from jumping the low fence if they take the leash off. It's also in prime rattlesnake territory.
Some of our dog parks just had a few strands of rusty tangled barbed wire for fences. Then moths after a national magazine listed Albuquerque as being dog friendly, the city removed the barbed wire and cleaned these parks up. I guess some one complained.
Probably my hounds would jump the fence, get run over and break out with some type of skin ulcer that I've seen on dogs.

Best Stores:

Dogs are welcome at home improvement stores. There are several restaurants with patios that welcome dogs-call ahead, as managers and policies change-also-some have gone out of business. Some restaurants say dogs are welcome, but they have to stay in the patio area. Problem-you have to heave the dog over a high wall or fence for the dog to get in and out of the patio area- I'm used to Spain, where dogs lie under the tables inside the eatery-

1. Pets are really welcome and patrons control their dogs. I hate having a dog on a real long leash or no leash run out from an aisle and trip me.
2. They have lots of herbal suppliments to help your animal. Missy gets car sick and they gave me information on products that should help her on the phone.
3. They are set up with baths, so you can wash your dog there at a reasonable fee.
4. They have home delivery for their goods. They are very friendly and helpful.
5. They have convenient parking-It's not a mall-so you can park within a few feet of the entrance and not worry about being run over trying to get to the door.
6. Their prices are reasonable.
7. Low price shot clinics. I was trying to get a fly repellent for my dogs-we live near a race track-and this was the only place that carried something safe for dogs. I do clean my yard every day and my neighbors are clean.

1. It's at the east end of the shopping center, so parking is easy.
2. Staff is friendly.
3. Large supply of dog repellent sprays, topical antibiotics, etc. that other Petsmarts don't carry.
4. If you arrive late, they'll still let you shop.
5. Dog grooming and shot clinic.
6. Long hours. My neighbor's little dog thinks that my front yard is it's turf. It came running, growling and tried to attack my pit bull and the 2 80 lb hounds when we stepped out for a pack walk. Then I was able to find the spray at the Academy store and used it. Later I was able to video tape the little monster attacking a WW II vet. The vet promised to kill it next time & I told the owner that I'd give the tape to animal control the next time there was an incident. Problem seems solved. This is one of the problems that make Alb. problematic-inconsistency and focusing on minor problems like blind cats.

I can't really recommend other pet stores, as I've had to complain about loose dogs, as I picked myself up from the deck, couldn't get help in buying electronic fences, etc.. The staffs were unsympathetic about needing to repell a dog, they have limited merchansdise or they are so far away, i.g. Rio Rancho and the Westside.

We Will Never Stop Searching!

We lost Blu J in Miami Beach, FL a few years ago and I still do this whenever I can....because I made Blu J a promise that I would never stop looking. He's a grey Male Chihuahua with a white chest. If he somehow found a good home then I wouldn't take him away if he's being loved. But....if he's somewhere where he's still lost, we will always want him and we will always miss him. Rottweilers have a reputation for being tough and aggressive, but this is usually due to training and socialization rather than characteristics of the breed. Rottweilers can make great pets due to their loyalty and intelligence. Some can be very gentle.

History

Rottweilers are believed to be descendants of Roman herding dogs. In the heyday of the Roman Empire, these dogs traveled to southern Germany, to a town called Rottweil. There was a thriving cattle trade in Rottweil and these dogs were used by the locals as "butcher dogs" to help drive the cattle to market.

Rottweilers gained popularity in the 19th century as police dogs, and grew in popularity as pets in the 1970s. Rottweilers are one of the most popular breed in the United States.

Physical description

Rottweilers are medium- to large-sized black dogs with rust markings similar to a Doberman Pinscher’s. They have solid, medium-sized muscular bodies and alert, strong demeanors. Males usually have larger frames and bigger bones than females.

Temperament

Rottweilers are generally calm, self-assured, and intelligent dogs. They are confident creatures who are best suited for one- or two-person households. Because of their size, strength, and inherent tendency to protect, Rottweilers must be well trained and socialised. They can make excellent family dogs if allowed to be part of the family in the house.
From the German Rottweiler standard:
"Good natured, placid in basic disposition and fond of children, very devoted, obedient and willing to work..."
There is no difference between German Rottweilers and American Rottweilers. A Rottweiler is German if it was born in Germany! Tail docking is now banned in Germany; a Rottie born in Germany will have an intact tail.
Rottweilers can have tendencies towards aggression to other dogs. They can be dominant and wilful, and are not an ideal "first dog" unless you are willing to do extensive research and training. Careful breeding and determined training will ensure a better temperament.

Dog Care

Rottweilers have the following basic needs:

Exercise -- Rottweilers need a good amount of exercise to maintain wellbeing and good health. They need time for exercise and play.
Grooming – Rottweilers are heavy shedders and need regular grooming. They also can drool!
Living conditions – Rottweilers need strong socialization and training. They should be part of the family as they are very devoted dogs.
Diet – A good-quality diet is essential to ensuring the long-term health of your Rottweiler. The best diet for your dog is homemade fresh food, but that is usually not realistic for most owners. The next best thing is a high quality commercial food.

Health Issues

Rottweilers can be affected by some of the health issues typical to larger dogs, including:

Gassiness and flatulence
Excessive shedding
Drooling, especially in larger male dogs
Tendency to chronic joint problems and cancer in middle age

American Kennel Club Category

Rottweilers belong to the AKC Working group, which are characterized by guarding tendencies, need for a "job", and general large sizes. Other dogs in the Working group include Doberman Pinschers, Siberian Huskies, and Great Danes.

Life Expectancy

This breed has a somewhat short life expectancy of between eight and ten years.

History

For many years the "Coolie" has been known as the "German
Coolie". Many generations of people believed the Coolie was a German bred dog. There is much controversy concerning the time and origin of development of the Coolie breed. The Coolie breed was selectively bred from various herding bred dogs for the purpose of working livestock.

In May 2006, Mike Bryant, Chair, Australian Shepherd Club of America, Stockdog Committee stated that the German Coolie was added to the list of ASCA-accepted herding breeds

Excerpts from ancestral research

Angela Sanderson is quoted in her book, The Complete Book of Australian Dogs, not all the working dogs brought to Australia during the last century were from Britain. There was a diverse variety of other European breeds, and it is still possible to find descendants of some of these early working dogs. Among them is a type known as the German Collie, or by its colloquial name 'German Coolie' or 'Coulie'. In von Stephanitz's book The German Shepherd in Word and Picture (1925), there is mention that Australian graziers were sufficiently impressed with German sheepdogs to import some. These dogs would almost certainly have been crossed with local dogs, among which could have been the Border Collie. von Stephanitz's classic work covered all manner of German sheepdogs. Among them were what he called the 'tiger-spotted sheepdog' that could be found in several provinces of Germany. Two pictures of the dogs from Saxony are of special interest: one shows a long-coated prick-eared type similar to the German Collie; the second, from Brunswick, is identical to the German Coolie, including the shorter hair. The photographs are black and white, but Stephanitz describes the dogs are merle coloured. Beilby mentions as early as 1896 that Blue Merle Collies in Australia were known as German Coolies. Certainly many Blue Merle Scottish Collies were brought to Australia in the 1840s. [In the British magazine The Field (1901)] Mr. Freeman Lloyd wrote at that time: There is, what is known as the German Collie -- a wall-eyed merle, probably a cross between a [Smithfield and the Scottish Collie]. He gets his name from a very good working strain owned by a German, and imported from the Fatherland many years ago".

"A few references to the "German Coolie," "German Koolie" or "German Collie" appear in various letters and articles in working dog magazines and in a few books. The Koolie and the Smithfield exist in Australia to this day as working dogs, not recognized by the bench show authorities (there is, however, a breed club for the Koolie). With regard to the Koolie, the dog was "German" in that it was popular in an area of Australia where there were many German settlers who used this dog, much as the Australian Shepherd is "Basque" due to Basque sheepherders using it in the American West, rather than these breeds having their principal origin with dogs brought from Germany or the Basque country. Photos of Koolies and Smithfields show strong resemblance to the Australian Shepherd in overall form and color, although Koolie's can also be shorthaired and prick-eared (as were many early Aussie's) and Smithfields can have Beardie-like coats". "Captain James Cook’s First Fleet (1770) landed in Port Jackson (now Sydney), Australia with convicts and their guards, together with food and provisions for starting up their new lives in the colonies. Among the livestock transported on these ships were dogs (presumably herding dogs/‘collie’ types), 44 sheep, 4 mares, 2 stallions, 4 cows, 1 bull, 1 bull calf, and 19 goats. The ‘collie’ dogs of these early pioneers were the ancestors of the Koolie, the Kelpie and Australian Cattle Dog. The early pioneers required a big, strong dog for mustering and moving huge herds of cattle and so the Koolie evolved from the crossing of German and British ‘collies’ with British Smithfields. The resultant offspring produced dogs with shorter legs capable of working on the cattle and sheep trucks and were referred to as either Australian Koolie's or German Koolie's (often spelt Coulie or Coolie which could have arisen from the derogatory term ‘coolie’, used to refer to immigrant workers in Australia, or to the accent that the Germans placed on the word ‘Collie’). German immigrants favoured the south of the continent and in that area these working collies were referred to as German Koolie's. Unfortunately the Koolie, like its Smithfield descendants, did not adapt well to the intense heat of the Australian outback as they were too large and cumbersome, and their vociferous nature was not conducive to their work". Physical Description and Size

Sizes range from 16 inches to 23 inches at the shoulder and 35 to 50 pounds in weight. Physical appearance depends on their environment and the stockmen's needs. Coolies that are specifically used for herding cattle in rugged large open terrain tend to have longer legs and heavier bones with solid frames. Coolies that are specifically used for herding sheep, or that are used for loading trucks and in yards tend to be smaller, lighter framed with leaner bodies. Smooth coats are preferred over the long coated dogs. The ears can be dropped or pricked, pricked being preferred by most. The Coolie come in any color except brindle. The merle coloration is preferred by most.

Temperament

The German Coolie displays a temperament which is friendly, attentive, and outgoing. They are never aggressive and have usually never met a stranger. They are loyal, devoted with a strong bond to their owner and family. If properly socialized, they adore children.

Coolies are known for their intelligence and herding desire. They are exceedingly attentive, respond quickly and eagerly to training. They have the ability to adapt to any situation.

Characteristics and Working Ability

Coolies have impeccable work ethics, unsurpassed biddability and superior temperaments. They are a versatile breed and excel at any task that is set before them, rather it be herding livestock; performing in the sports arena; Search and Rescue; or just being a companion.

Coolies are confident all-round dogs with a natural ability to head, heel, gather and fetch, as well as drive, livestock. When gathering livestock together, they have the ability to keep them together quietly and confidently using speed and force when needed. They will also hold the livestock using their body language, when necessary. Some Coolies will "back" sheep (jumping on the back of the sheep to get the front ones moving). "Backing" isn't commonly taught or practiced in the USA.

Coolies are hardy, athletic, displaying endurance and enough speed to outrun and head stock when required. They have the ability to be tough and gritty on incompliant livestock and soft when the livestock are complying. They remain alert on the job and relax when they are off livestock. Some call this an "on and off switch".

Coolies are extremely intelligent, take very few lessons to learn and naturally seem to know what to do while thinking for himself. They readily take direction and commands. Coolies can adjust to any situation without stress and some look forward to a challenge.

Dog Care

Most Coolies are known to love water. If there is a body of water, the Coolie can usually be found swimming. Bathing is necessary for these water-loving dogs as many water-borne diseases can be found in many lakes, rivers, creeks and ponds. The short coated Coolies are more wash and wear, whereas the longer coated ones require brushing to avoid mats in their coat.

A good quality dog food, whether it be dry kibble or canned food is sufficient for this active breed.

Health Issues and Life Expectancy

Coolies are known for being vigorously healthy dogs with no known conditions that affect them as a breed. They are tough, strong and possess excellent stamina and endurance. Some Coolies have been known to live into their 20's, while the normal life expectancy is 10 to 15 years.

No dog is without health problems. Since there is still much discussion, theory, fact, legend and assumptions about the breeds that were used in the early development of the German Coolie, it is safe to say they are not without genetic skeletons in their closet. The breed that most agree upon, that make up the Coolie, is the "Blue Merle Collie". Further research indicates that the breed is a derivative from early herding breeds from the United Kingdom such as the Scotch Collie (rough collie) though some believe that the German Coolie is a member of the Border Collie family and known throughout the British Isles as the Blue Merle Collie and that these dogs can still be found today in Wales, Scotland and England. You will read on many sites that the Coolie is the most healthy dog on this planet. This may or may not be the complete case. Depending on whom you obtain your Coolie from, this dog may have been ancestors, such as the Smithfield, Border Collie, Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dog, and one breeder admitted to knowing German Shepherd is in her lines. Unfortunately, with this, comes genetic defects that are incorporated into the Coolie breed from other breeds. There are many breeders/owners/stockmen who have chosen to ONLY breed Coolie to Coolie; and those are commended in their efforts to keep the lines pure, for lack of a better word.

Currently, no DNA markers have been located specifically for the Coolie. With the possibility of infusions of the above mentioned dog breeds - DNA tests that are specifically for these breeds, could (might) work for the Coolie. Some Coolie owners/breeders are under the impression that there is a DNA test that can clear the Coolie for every single genetic disease and hip dysplasia (is an actual claim on a website) that the canine can carry -- this is very misleading and is not true. Hip dysplasia is not a DNA test (yet). It is a simple x-ray that is taken by a licensed Veterinarian and then sent to the OFA for reading by three board-certified veterinary radiologists. Again, no DNA markers have been located specifically for the Coolie.

Registry's for the Working Coolie

The German Coolie Club of America is the parent club for this wonderful breed. The German Coolie Club of America was formed in 2005. The club was formed as a result of the lack of German Coolie related organizations within the United States of America. In forming this club we hope to bring attention to the breed, and to provide information and help to owners of the breed (world wide). With the German Coolie becoming more and more popular, it was voted on and decided to form partnerships with the countries of Australia and Canada in the preservation and promotion of the German Coolie as the unique breed of dog that it has been since the 1800's. The German Coolie Club of America is now known as the International German Coolie Society and Registry, with affiliate branchs in Canada and Australia.

The Working Koolie Association of Australia Inc (WKAA Inc) was formed in November 2002 in order to foster and preserve an understanding and admiration of the true authentic Working Koolie dog.

This hard working breed has been hidden away in rural Australia since the mid 1800's. They have been eagerly and conscientiously going about their work on the farm with little or no recognition for the difficult and demanding work they do, herding sheep, cattle goats and almost anything that will move.

Best walks: There are organized dog walks and dog costume events to raise money for animal rescue. The City of Albuquerque has an Internet site that lists these events and dog parks.

Best dog parks: I've had vets tell me that these are a prime source of infections and emergency care. We have rattlesnakes here.
