Mini Pin Temperment Problems
Mar 14 2008, 1:31 AM EDT
My husband and I own a 2 yr old male and have had him since he was 5 months old. At the advice of our vet, we had him neutered as he is only a pet and not intended for show or breeding. Post the surgery, we have found him to be a little more aggressive towards us. He use to growl when trying to take things from him that he shouldn't have but after the procedure, we find him to be more sensitive to sound and growling and snarling at us much more. If we go near his food, try to move him when laying, crawl into bed or merely look at him, he begins to growl for no apparent reason.

Of course, I find this behavior to be highly alarming. My history with dogs was primarily with Irish Wolfhounds. My family use to breed and show champion hounds and never did we come across a dog with such a disposition. Because of this, I'm not quite certain what measures to take or how to rectify the situation. You can all understand that this temperment problem leads to me fear his possible biting my husband or myself. He has snapped a few times at me already and come close to biting but I'm not certain if he stopped of I managed to pull away fast enough.

Can anyone offer suggestions to help fix this problem? Are there sites I can view to gain more information on rectifying temperment issues? Feel free to reply here or email me directly:

Does anyone know if these dogs are shy? I just bought one from a breeder and she doesnt move at all. She just stands there. She shakes constantly. She trembles pretty hard. Does anyone know if she is going to stay scared forever :( I bought her at 6 months old.

Hi I have been breeding and raising minipins for years. How old was he when he was neutered. Believe it or not that can make a differemce on any dogs temperment. You also have ot show the upper hand. If he nips or snips at you in a med to loud tone say NO to him and be firm. If that doesn't work find a good chink of time alone with him and allow thim to realize that he is loved. Sometimes being at a vetcan traumatize a dog because they think you are not coming back for them. Find out if he was put in a cage with another dog at the vet while he was neutered and if he was find out what breed it was. For him to snap while yougo near his food dish something happened to make him this way. You will have to work with him diligently to reenforce you're not going to leave him. Minipins can be spiteful some of their "lovely" attributes,, keep reassuring him he is loved no matter how much he pushes you away. If he doesn't respond than I would talk to your vet and find an obedience training course at your local petsmart or petco. Do you find this valuable?

They are not normally skiddish dogs. The complete opposite, the yusually stand there ground whether its a big threat or little. no she won't be scared forever. do you leave her alone for long periodsof time? theydo go through sever seperation anxiety..I would talk to the breeeder about her "lineage." Make sure she wasn't innerbred with another type of dog from her bitch and sire. Do you find this valuable?

Usually they are not a scared dog, they think they are alot bigger than they really are. Unfortunately though because you got her at 6 months old anything could have happened to her to make afraid. If a dog is mistreated as a pup they can get very jumpy and unfortunately no one is going to admit to you if she was mistreated. Also, they tend to be a very loyal dog so if she was very attached to the people that she was with then she could be experiencing separation problems. A few other things you could try to help her would be to expose her to other animals and see if she opens up at all. And expose her to a person of your opposite sex. We once had a dog that we got when he was about 9 months old and he was terrified of women but perfectly fine with men. We found out later that he had been abused by a woman so he associated women with pain. The best suggestion I could give you would be to give her as much attention as possible and let her know that she is loved and safe. Good luck. Do you find this valuable?
