I own one of these--or he and I are best friends--. He is my Companion Dog. The word companion doesn't do him justice. We watch television together, take walks. He is very vocal. And actually has an inside voice. The breed , according to everything I have read is the oldest breed in north america. Why is it nobody has even heard of them. They would be consdered herding dogs. But, they are everything dogs. Has anyone out there ever heard of them or does anyone have one of these wonderful and beautiful animals. Saturnsmom1@yahoo.com 6  out of 6 found this valuable. Hi, I have 2 bluetick coonhound mixes. They aren't listed here either and a Bluetick is a mix of the English Redticks brought over by early colonist and the French Blue Gascon hound that French explorers brought over. Who protected the colonists? Catahoulas, redticks, French Gascons and Blueticks. What helped the pioneer colonist hunt for food-subsistance-these wonderful hounds. I feel upset too. Stonewall sleeps with me and Missy guards me. They know that they aren't supposed to follow a trail on a walk. They are wonderfully atheletic and awkward. Goofy too. Why don't we start a group for the early American breeds-Catahoulas-coon and bloodhounds, and the fighting curs that were in the pack. I LOVE my catahoula leopard dog. I have been raising my puppy from February when i adopted her from a local no-kill shelter. She was nine weeks old and her cellmate was this little black lab pup. My boyfriend and i checked out both of them, i was leaning towards the black lab but ended up with the speckled one...thank goodness. My puppy has been a very quick learner and house-breaking was not hard its the chewing part that is rough. SHe has demolished shoes, clothes, towels, carpet, rugs, and the yard. I love my little baby, though she does get disciplined when she does any of those destructive activities. We exercise her at least an hour daily, wrestle with her, she even plays rough with our 85lbs english pointer who loves her. Well she makes a person feel young. Currently she is almost 8 months and weighs just over 50lbs. She is an absolute joy! But i would love to talk about catahoulas, there just doesn't seem to be that much information on them besides people who are starting to breed them for color rather than for genes...which worries me.

I don't have any specific info on the breed, but I had a Catahoula as a small child. He was one of many farm dogs that we had as pets. He fathered on of my favorite pets. The mom was my first dog, her name was Sissy (beagle). The Catahoula and Sissy got together and had a pup named "BigPup".. He and his mom were so caring for me. I would walk through the woods as a small girl. The dogs would protect me from snakes and such.. They always barked and herded me away from danger.
I am an animal lover and have adopted 2 dogs as an adult. I would advise anyone looking for a family pet to save a life. The internet is a great tool. Besides the mixed breeds seem to be more even tempered and soooo greatful for anything or any love you give them!

They've been around forever in the Mississippi Delta-like the French Gascons they came from France. They are good herders-great family dogs. other places in the south they call them those black dawgs..
If you look in the photo section, you'll see 2 Catahoula Leopard dogs. I think one is on the 3rd or 4th page-it's spotted and then there is another one that looks like it just came in from wandering or something. America's developement would have been slowed down without these dogs, the blackmouth curs, treeing fiest dogs and the hounds. I lived in rural Georgia for a while and they let the hogs run wild-then in the late fall-they turned the dogs loose and rounded up the hogs. The baying, bawling, barking, tinkling of dog bells, squealing and squalling of pigs, men shouting. Then they'd use the same dogs for coons. A pack of coons can destroy 40 acres of corn very quick-they take a bite out of each ear. In the west, they used them for coyotes to protect the herds. I lived in a village and they were unhappy that i had such a huge dog that roamed-French Gascon- but the herds' mortality rate went down and they found dead coyotes. What's better, he turned the village non-hunters into a prowling guard at night. They were finally happy when a toddler climbed on his back like a horse and used his ears for reins. "Full Cry" is a hound mag that gives space to leopard dogs and with the hurricanes, You might be able to rescue one. Most are meduim-large sized-smaller than a German Shepard-about 30-40 lbs. Go to Petfinder.com and do a search for leopard dogs and hounds-as in the South they are considered a type of hound.

sorry, I can't find the pic of the spotted leopard dog-they take pics out and mix them up-today, 09/28/08, they have more pics of my hounds than than there was last night. The poor looking one is on page 14-but it's not a good pic for lots of different reasons. They say you can add them to your album-I just might start doing that and tell everybody that the dog belongs to another member-I call my album the "Hound Chronicles" 0  out of 1 found this valuable. I own a female named Maisee. Before I laid eyes on her four years ago in a vets office I was a cat person. She is the smartest dog I have ever come across and beautiful too. Her litter mate and brother Buster is owned by good friends of ours. Maisee is very vocal also, she talks every night when daddy and Kameron get home from football practice or when she wants something. I cannot tell you how much we love this dog, so much so that she has gone on every vacation with us since we got her four years ago. We can't bring ourselves to leave her so we just find pet friendly hotels to stay in. We will always own a Catahoula, as that is our favorite breed (we also love our Lab Marley). Check out our new album with pictures called Maisee and Marley's Wonderful Life. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Aw, yes-chewing- 8 new hoses at $20/each; my matress; the family room couch; 2 recliners; the lawn mower, dancing boots; work boots; 2 pairs of clogs; high heels; sandals; vacuum cleaner; new running shoes; old running shoes; all of the bottom knobs on the dresser; rulers; pencils; wood kitchen chairs; couch accent pillows; shovel, trowel, screwdriver and rake handles; electric cords; table legs; work gloves; my work pants; paint brushes for fine art; sea sponges; potted plants; potatoes, apples; books; and it does not exist if they haven't chewed it up or tried to chew it up. A few nights ago, Missy upchucked some pieces of plywood that wouldn't go through her system.
They are doing a whole lot better-but I think that it might be that there isn't a lot left to chew. I ran a radio wire around, so my new lawn mower and old tools can be placed out of their reach. Last night I heard crunching and I ran over to find Missy crunching on ice cubes that had been dropped.
They are getting better. The other night they were tempted by the hose, so they dug a string of holes and drug the hose over and buried sections in the holes. It finally seemed to dawn on them that if they chew up leashes the'that we couldn't go on walks. They also get upset when I scream and cry. Dog repellents don't seem to work. In the last 2 weeks, it was only a pair of gloves, a screwdriver handle from the top of the table and the plywood scrap that I missed, when cleaning up. I do wood work. Screaming works well with them, while I shake what ever it is in their faces. They do get stressed by things and regress.

We have had a Catahoula for about 3 years now. We were able to adopt her thur a rescue group that was bringing dogs up north after Katrina. She is a wonderful dog and the funny thing is that she has done the least amount of damage by chewing of any dog we have had. Before adopting her I did alot of reading about the breed and was prepaid for some possible challenges in training and felt all the positives were well worth the trouble. I think our Cloe is very attached and engaged with her family and believe me when i say we are her family. She is not to be ignored, she is emotionally very sensitive and loving. My husband, I and our two grown sons give her allot of attention, respect, exercise and treats. She gives us a well behaved dog who I think loves and respects us.Don' get me wrong she is by no means and angel, she can be a wild thing and plays rough and hard, she has food issues and a strong prey drive. My son had to pull her of a tree the other night and carry her in the house because she had a screaming raccoon treed and wouldn't come when called.
She makes us laugh everyday and I can't imagine ever having any other breed ever again.

I hope that you Cat owners post pics of your hounds-as they are hounds-and the stock from which my Bluetick and Treeing Walker come from. The Catahoula Leopard dog is about the only hound breed recognised by the AKC-the others are called "Others". The AKC does say that Treeing Walkers are the most graceful. They haven't seen her, that's for sure-please post an album. Please- Do you find this valuable?
