Temperament of Labrador Retriever/ Catahoula Leopard Mix
Mar 27 2008, 9:06 PM EDT I am thinking of adopting this breed of dog and I was just curious as to the average temperament of the mix. I am aware that catahoulas are reserved towards strangers and may chase children and labs are generally well rounded but what of the two? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Temperament of Labrador Retriever/ Catahoula Leopard Mix

I am aware that catahoulas are reserved towards strangers and may chase children and labs are generally well rounded but what of the two?"I currently own a catahoula leopard puppy...so if anything they can be like clowns. She will give me a "high-five" rather than a handshake even though she knows both. She will bark as if to get you to play with her and sometimes won't shutup until you acknowledge her, also she would nip at your ankles. She is very very smart, so be careful. They seem to be able to learn very quickly even though getting them to do something can be difficult since they like to be stubborn depending on the situation. I have been socializing my little pup since i adopted her at 9 weeks and just recently she started showing some territoral instincts at 8 months. Now labs i think are not as territorial or as protective as the catahoulas and tend to have a lackadastical mindset. Catahoulas seem to be on a mission. Size wise they are about the same except labradors have a double coat and catahoulas have a single coat so you shouldn't leave your catahoula outside without some form of housing protection. I think all dogs will chase a child if he/she are running away from them. My puppy likes to chase and kiss little kids so i have to constantly watch her when kids are around. Even though i AM the pack leader the catahoula will challenge you if you don't act with conviction EVERY single time. I think you should adopt the dog only if you really think you can handle one just cause they require more responsibility than other dogs. There is one woman who see to comes to the local dog park and she has a lab/catahoula mix. He has a beautiful coat and is friendly to every human...now with most dogs he is fine but sometimes he will lunge at another dog because the contra dog got in his personal "space." I know im responding several months down the line but i hope you did adopt the dog. Good luck! Do you find this valuable? |
