What exactly is a Coolie - Koolie?
Apr 30 2008, 12:48 PM EDT
I read lots of websites and lots of people are calling dogs that are Border Collie/Kelpie a Coolie. Some call Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie Coolies. Then some call dogs they have rescued Coolies! So, what exactly IS a Coolie? Why do you call your dogs Coolies when I've read that they are Border Collie crossed? How can that be a Coolie? Then I read one person's website, Royalla - something like that, and her bloodlines are posted and the dogs are Border Collie, Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dogs, and unknown, but yet they are called Koolies? 2 out of 3 found this valuable. What others call their dogs is up to them, though Royalla has never hidden the fact that her dogs contain other working dog blood. What coolie hasnt? The only one of our coolie/bc that is not desexed has been described as a stunning dog by Yatahae. 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

4. What is a Koolie?
May 8 2008, 12:47 AM EDT
I must have missed something. All I'm asking is what is a Koolie? I'm not trying to start a fight, I really want to know. I have a Lab/Golden cross but I don't call him a Lab or a Golden. When someone asks if he's a Lab, I say no and then tell them he's a Lab/Goldie cross. I'm interested in another type of dog and am interested in something that hasn't been ruined by the AKC popular breeders club. Labs have so many problems with their hips and now Goldies are having heart problems. All I'm asking is why the dog is called a Koolie if he's crossed with something else? Is this what a Koolie is? Border Collies have too many problems because they are so popular and I don't want to have to deal with another hip surgery. Do you do any testing? How are they with kids? Do they do well with older dogs? Are they easy or hard to train? Why is there so much whoop-te-do about these dogs? I'm just trying to find a dog that doesn't have the medical problems that alot of the popular breeds have nowdays. I didn't expect to be burned at the stake for asking questions that any breeder should be willing to honesty answer without biting my head off. If you won't help me, please direct me to someone that will.

We have never tried to hide the fact that 3 of our dogs have border blood. l love borders. What others call their dogs is up to them. Our other 4 dogs have 5+ generations of known coolie blood, bred for work. But saying that why is any coolie called a coolie when it is common knowledge that they have been infused with the blood of kelpie and borders. Take a look at the pics of coolies here on wiki and see what breeds you can see in them. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Maybe I'm at the wrong website because I don't see where you've explained their bloodlines. I only see that you call "Coolie". So why are they called "Coolie" when they are border crossed and the 5+ generation dogs are also called Coolie? Sorry but I don't understand, my Lab/Goldie isn't called a Lab or Goldie, just a cross. I'm just researching and trying to find a good dog without any hip or heart problems. I looked at the pictures and that is why I'm interested because they aren't full of health problems. Are you saying they aren't really Coolies, but cross breds? Because I don't know, that is why I'm asking questions that no one wants to, or can, answer. Then I, again, have to ask the question why are they still called Coolies, if they are cross bred with another breed? Is this what a Coolie is? And why can some do that, but not others? Can, or will, someone (anyone) answer my questions about the dog itself? Does anyone do any testing? How are they with kids? Do they do well with other dogs? Are they easy or hard to train? Do they have a hard or soft temperament? Why is it so hard to find out the answers to these questions???? I'm asking a breeder for help.

"My border/coolie cross is registered in the C section with the Koolie Club of Australia. Go to their web site www.koolie.net and it explains their registration system. The 2 pups l have from this bitch are by a koolie registered in the A section of the KCA so they can be registered as coolies so l call them coolies. As far as l know, no-one tests for any health/genetic problems but it is something we plan to do when we decide to breed. We will not breed our dogs just for the sake of breeding. Our dogs are great with kids, and other dogs though not all dogs are the same as in any breed, though lm sure other owners will tell you what their dogs are like. The dogs we have are extremely easy to train, very smart and willing to learn. Again as in any breed some have soft temps, others are harder. We have the bloodlines of 3 of the best known coolie breeders in Australia. Borahview, Toolalla and Tjukurpa. Our Borahview dog is extremely loyal and smart. Very easy to train and has a calm yet bold disposition. Our Toolalla bred dogs have a combination. One has a hard temp yet is very gentle and loving. One is an absolute sook but is forceful enough when working stock. Our Tjukurpa dogs are great. They are family orientated, though they do work stock, they are loyal and simply adore their owners. l wouldnt trade any of my dogs for any other coolie in Australia. Ask other breeder/owners. lm sure they will have different opinions to me. 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thanks for the information. I visited the site and read that the "C" dogs were used to "maintain the working ability of the Koolies". But I thought they already were working dogs? So what you are saying is that a person can have a dog that is a Koolie mixed with something, register it with the club and it would be a "C" registered dog. Then after you breed it to an A or B registered dog you can register the puppies because they are then Koolies? Well, wouldn't they just still be a cross bred? If I bred my Lab/Goldie to a Lab the puppies still wouldn't be a Lab and I couldn't register them as Lab's. Really, I couldn't register them at all. Please forgive me, but I'm just not understanding why these dogs are called fullblood when they are not. If they are cross bred with Border Collies, I surely do not want one, because there are so many diseases with the Border Collie now days that I'd be right back to where I'm at now - hip dysplasia and you say you don't do any testing? Thanks for your time and this has been the worst experience I've ever had at trying to find out information about a dog breed. If its this hard I'd hate to see if I actually buy a puppy, would I still get no help? It's like it's a closed circle of dog breeders that are crossing whatever to whatever and calling it a breed just to make money. Well, no thanks. Until someone tries to help, I'm off this breed and wouldn't recommend it to anyone! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"We have only bred 1 litter which was over 3 years ago and dont plan on breeding any in the future. It does seem that people can and are breeding whatever they like and calling it coolie. My family has some wonderful dogs, crossbred and 'pure' (?) , some of the best we have ever had. But l doubt that you will ever, ever find a real purebred coolie. l think that the original coolie has been infused with so many other working breeds over the years that it just a heinz variety. We adore our dogs but have made the decision that the nastiness that goes on within the breed is just not worth the fuss and will have nothing more to do with coolies. This will be my last post on the subject. Do you find this valuable? |
