Behaviorist vs. Trainer
Aug 26 2008, 12:27 PM EDT
I've heard that there is a definite difference between a trainer and a behaviorist. I have been having difficulty with my dogs mostly with interactions with other dogs and when people coming to the door (over excitement). The problem is that when over-stimulated my JRT turns on my other dogs. I have not been able to control this behavior myself despite several attempts and so now need to hire a trainer/behavioralist. I've been told a behaviorist's techniques are much more long-lasting.

My dogs act the same way- mainly Sadie my Shepherd/Collie mix. She doesn't really like other dogs except for Buddie and she gets way over excited. It is really hard to control them when they act like that... I know from experience! A retired dog behavioralist actually lives up the street from me. I have talked to him about training my dogs, but he won't since he is retired. This really stinks because my dogs can be very overwhelmingly hyper at times. I wish you luck with your puppies! I hope that we can find behavioralists.

Why don't you start a discussion-Wanted-behavoirist in whatever area that you live in- like Des moines, IA or Jacksonville, FL- then you 2 can share hints. Also go to a pet store or look in the phone book if you live in a suburban area. i know that my hounds hate the Dog whisperer. They don't even like it the few times that I watched it. Missy just came and licked my ear, which means that she has to go out for the bath room.
