My boyfriend wants to get married, and his choice for a wedding present to me is a dog, we both have 8 neices (altogether) whose age varies, and vists us alot... So we would like suggestions on a smart, friendly lovable breed of dog that is okay with both babies and my difficult older sister, but alos would be a good watch dog as well. Do you find this valuable?

Bassett Hounds are very good with small children, and older relatives even difficult ones... they can withstand alot of abuse. I once had a friend's 3yr old visit me and he thought it would be a great Idea to hit my then 8yr old Bassett with a stick as hard as he could, and although Bailey my Bassett Hound yelped he didn't bite or hurt the child as most elderly dogs would do, they're not hard to look after and most prefer to be couch potatoes so they don't need alot of walks.

They Love to be with people though and can usually be trained pretty easily with food rewards, although there are a few breeds of dog out there that would fit your particular needs. You may want a more active dog like a collie who like frequent walks but are also generally great with Children and relatives alike. I'm sure you'll find a great breed of dog that you'll Love... Good Luck though.
