Something is wrong with my dog!
Sep 6 2008, 11:52 AM EDT I have a female black lab/german sheppard mix. Her name is Ella May and she'll be a year old in the second week of November. I bought her when she was seven weeks old. I love her so much, she's like one of my children. Since I brought her home she's been my little shadow, following me all over and coming to me when she wants some tender loving attention. She's my baby and I'm worried about her health. Normally she's very active and playfull. Three days ago I noticed that all she wanted to do was lay around the house. She doesn't want to play and she isn't eating, only drinking. She's also been vomitting a lot. I checked her stool and vomit for blood and worms but there are no signs of either. However I did find a lot of hair in her stool but no signs of her eating any grass for an upset stomach. Until two weeks ago, I had been a stay at home mom. My youngest child is starting school so I decided to get a job and now I'm not home as much. Ella is home by herself most of the day, almost every day. Could this be a sign of depression or is it something more serious? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Something is wrong with my dog!
Sep 6 2008, 9:19 PM EDT I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I'm not a vet or anything, but this could mean that she is having digestive health problems. I would suggest taking her to the vet as soon as possible.. this could be something serious. Your vet can help her get back to normal or give her special medication. I'm sure anyone else would also reccomend taking her to the vet. I hope she gets better soon! Do you find this valuable? |

I know that I need to get her to the vet but as of right now, I don't have the money to take her. The local vet's policy is that you have to pay for services recieved the same day. If they treat your animal and you can't pay them that day, they keep your pet there and then charge you for every day that they've had them on top of the original fee. I can not afford that. I can't even call the vet's office because they charge you for "over the phone consultations". This is why I decided to try looking for options on line. I thought that maybe someone would see my problem and would be able to give me some possible treatments that I could try at home myself. I did try taking some of her food and pureeing it, then I mixed that with more water so it wasn't so pasty. She's been drinking so I thought that if I did that, then maybe she'd drink it and get some nutrients. She has drank some of it since I did that last night and she hasn't vomitted from it. She also seems to be a little more alert and responsive today so I'm hoping this will work. Thank you again for taking the time to read my problem and responding to it. It's really nice to know that their are people out there that care :) Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Something is wrong with my dog!
Sep 11 2008, 5:45 PM EDT I know how you feel. Here, a fecal test is almost $60, plus the $60 vet visit. Does your dog have it's shots? It sounds almost like parvo. When parvo first hit dogs, we lost a pup. I know that raw eggs can have samonella, but I would add a raw egg to the blended brew. My Dad treated our poisoned hound with raw eggs. The dog was convulsing, but lived along time and hunted. I mixed raw eggs to grain for my horses and they had great-shiney coats. You could soft boil the egg. Can you touch the dog's stomach? If so, gently press around and see if you can feel something hard or where the dog hurts. It might have swallowed something that got stuck inside. Sometimes an animal will roll over with a gob of food in the intestines and the intestines get twisted up. This happens a lot to Bloodhounds and horses. Since we have 3 dogs, I didn't know which pile of poop belonged to what dog. I called our vet and asked if I could bring in the poop before the visit. When I went out, the dogs didn't poop. The secretary almost couldn't handle it-and the vets had to talk it over and called me back the next day. I live in NM and I don't think that there is a vet that will extend credit. It's pay as you go. Let me know how it works out, okay? Do you find this valuable? |

Sep 14 2008, 12:13 PM EDT Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. I finally was able to get ahold of a vet that use to come to my farm and perform checkups on the cows. He told me to keep up with what I was doing, so I did. After a few days my Ella May was back to her old self again. Thank God she's better now, I don't know what I'd do without her. RE: Something is wrong with my dog!
Sep 14 2008, 2:15 PM EDT I guess that she had a simple virus. I'm so glad that she's okay now. I'd give her dog vitamins to help her fight things off. Her system might be weak for a while and you don't want her to get sick again. Also-keep her away from other dogs-dog parks-groomers-etc. When I was a kid, our little walker coonhound mix was poisoned. As I said before, he recovered. Then in the 5th grade my Dad brought home a stray cocker spaniel type dog. My Dad had cancer, we had to move because he finally found a job that he could handle. We were really broke, so we put off the puppy shots. Becky died from distemper. Then I had a hound poisoned with an illegal poison-it kills the kidneys before there are other signs, so I lost him. I really know how you feel. I also know what it's like to have a hard time with money. I'd like to keep in touch with you off and on-so I'll fill out the friend thing. sometime when you get a chance-I don't know how you'll have the time- go to the general photo-album page and click on albums. I have some pics of my hounds. It's not a page or site as they seem to have lots of up keep- by the way, how are you doing at work? Take care- meyati Do you find this valuable? |
