Anonymous	white german shepard May 30 2006, 8:36 AM EDT we have just got a white german shepard and what a great dog it is very loyal and great with the kids we have a problem with his weight as we got it off some traverlers but with the right food we will put some weight on it the dog is about 18 months old and very playfull Post reply 6 out of 8 found this valuable. THANX A MILLION ARINGSBURG KENNEL akr_shepherd@yahoo.com " i absolutely agree to AK's comment...the problem with the dog's health could well be resolved by deworming. however if you have received the dog from a traveller, try to get in touch with him & get details of the dog's prior vaccination, your vet will want to know the details. health supplements & a good diet with a lot of love & care should bring the health back to normal. a white german shepherd is basically albino, so take good care of it's skin, as it's more vulnerable than others. a good dog is a great friend, so take good care. wish u all the best. john clifton, london, uk Post reply 1 out of 1 found this valuable. abbyk9	RE: white german shepard Jun 12 2007, 6:31 AM EDT A White German Shepherd, or WGSD, looks exactly the same as any other German Shepherd in terms of structure. The only difference between a WGSD and any other German Shepherd is the fact that it's, well, white. It should be noted that WGSDs are not albinos. The white color is caused by a masking gene, not albinism. White GSDs have black nose leather and dark eyes just like other German Shepherds. Post reply 1 out of 1 found this valuable. abbyk9	RE: white german shepard Jun 12 2007, 6:34 AM EDT John, You should be aware that White German Shepherds are not albinos, not even "basically" albinos. Their skin is no more sensitive than that of any other color of German Shepherd. The white coloring is due to a masking gene, that causes the dog's coloring (black and tan, sable, etc.) to be "masked" with white. It does not affect the dog's pigment like albinism does. White German Shepherds, for example, have dark eyes and black nose leather - albinos have light eyes, with pink skin around the eyes, and pink noses. Post reply 1 out of 1 found this valuable. abbyk9	RE: white german shepard Jun 12 2007, 6:38 AM EDT You cannot show your WGSD bitch in AKC (or SV, for that matter) because the white color is a disqualification under the breed standard. The color does not affect the dog's working ability in any way, but whites and other colors such as liver or blue are disqualified from being shown. The only reason for this is the breed standard. However, you can still show this bitch in conformation. There are WGSD clubs and in Europe there's the Berger Blanc Suisse club (BBS are the same as White German Shepherds) and you can show them there as well. If you plan to breed your white bitch (after proper health tests and titling, please), you don't have to breed her to a white dog. The white fur of your bitch is caused by a masking gene, which "masks" the colors of her fur. She does still carry the genetic material to produce black and tan or sable pups, and most likely will produce them with a colored stud - unless the colored stud carries the white gene. abbyk9	RE: white german shepherd Jun 12 2007, 6:41 AM EDT Congratulations on your new German Shepherd. You should take your new pup to the vet as soon as possible to have him examined and get all of his shots. If you got the dog from travelers, there is a good chance that he has not had vaccines and he may also need to be wormed. Your veterinarian can also help advise you in regards to a good diet for you pup, and suggest some supplements that will help keep him nice and strong for many years to come.
