At what age does a dog stop growing?

03/19/2008 I got 2 treeing coonhounds from a high kill shelter. The male Bluetick mix has slowly grown about 2 inches. We thought that he was an older dog, because of his scars and mannerisms, but the other day we realized that he was just as tall as the female. The female was puppyish and shot up a tad over 2 inches-when food was in constant supply. Now the male is less than a 1/4 inch shorter. My vets don't have any idea how old the hounds are. The shelter has a pen for people to drop off dogs after hours and tries to find homes for them. It's basically a "Don't ask-don't tell" pen. The workers drove up one morning and the 2 hounds were in the drop-off pen. It's on the freeway in the middle of the desert, so travelers seem to dump their cranky dogs out. In my city-people often are fined when they try to turn a dog into the facility.
The hounds seem to have been wild-they still catch wild birds-eat fruit and raw potatoes. They've finally quit trying to catch the goats and sheep on TV. They don't have fits any more when the dog dishes get empty and I can give them a bath in a bath tub by myself-using a regular collar. The female walker's tongue stuck out of her mouth for the first 6 weeks-now it's in her mouth all of the time. My son said that he heard that was from dehydration & bad nutrition-running all of the time. in the first 90 days, each one gained about 40 lbs. I'm taking them in to be weighed again-and it's time for shots-but I'd like to hear opinions of people from other areas. Thank you
