I hope that people do look through <Petfinder.com> It's so sad in many ways. The dogs are so beautiful and many counties work out of the sheriff's office. One problem is that many counties now try to limit the distance of the adopter-live in county-live within 50 miles of the shelter-home visits. I couldn't find the breed that I wanted-treeing coonhound-almost any breed. I was getting ready to purchase a pup, when I saw a petfinder for 2 coon hounds in a rural high kill shelter about a 100 miles one way. We had to get there in 4 hours-as the shelter would close. We broke the speed limit & prayed that these hounds would be suitable. The staff saw that the stuck-up hounds liked us a little bit and we really loved these dogs- and they bent some rules because we live in a city that has very strict rules. We took only one collar & leash-but we were charmed by their dignity. We thought that they were adult- but each one grew over an inch-female walker 2"- male bluetick 1.25". We found out that they were scheduled to be put down the next AM. It was rough because they had been wild-they still stalk fat birds. They heel, wait at the door, when people come in, run to my room-when I say, "Bed"-we want to lock them up- stopped a break-in at a neighbor's house-the local animal hater says that she feels safer and I'm so lucky. We have one elderly relative that comes over & hates all dogs. They usually go to my bed & stay there, until they do the pee-pee dance-then they come out quietly & let us know. We have a friend born with cerebral palsy & is in a wheel chair. They'll come by every so often and lie down at his feet or sit next to him-resting their head on the arm of his chair or lap. They seem to know-so they make the encounters for about 5 minutes. Bill just sits and has a big goofy smile & tries to pet them. When he's pushed inside- he's met by wagging tails & the male smiles
